Day 19: Sri Chinmoy 3,100 Mile Race
Is the course flat?
At first glance, the 3,100-mile course looks fairly flat. Certainly, there are no steep hills. Nevertheless, within the course there are gentle gradients and a total height gain of 3.14 metres per lap. To a casual observer walking along the course, this is the kind of height gain you might not give much attention to.
But for the runners endeavouring to run 5,653 laps, each small height gain becomes tremendously important. You will see runners adapt their style, walking up an incline and picking up their pace on the downhill. Each day, the race changes direction, which means the height gain appears in different ways. Some runners even talk about one direction feeling more like an "uphill" version.
One aspect of the 3,100 Mile Race is that everything happens on a much more extreme level. Runners go through numerous pairs of shoes, burn through thousands of calories a day (close to 10,000 a day, by one estimate), and also deal with a considerable, if gradual, height gain. Over the course of the race, the runners will effectively ascend a total height gain of 17,750 metres! Considering that Mount Everest is 8,848m, this means that during the race, the runners will effectively ascend twice the height of Mount Everest — quite a remarkable feat of vertical height gain to go along with the horizontal distance.
