Visitors to the race

Hardly a day goes by without visitors coming to the race. Often they are local runners with a long-standing connection to the race, who bring gifts of drinks or fruit for the runners. Sometimes people come from other parts of the city, such as Manhattan or Brooklyn, having heard about the race and wanting to see it for themselves.

Occasionally, visitors come with a special story and make a real effort to get here.

On Sunday, a Romanian couple, Florin Chira and his wife Anna, stopped by the race. Two days earlier, they had been half a world away, travelling in Romania, and stopped to eat at a small village café. Florin was wearing a running shirt, and the waitress said to him, “You look like a runner. Have you heard of Radu Budan? He is Moldova and Romania’s best ultrarunner.”

Florin happens to be an accomplished double triathlete, so he was very interested, although he had never heard of Radu. They chatted in the café for a while.

Afterwards, Florin looked Radu up online and discovered that he was currently running the 3,100 Mile Race. By coincidence, the couple were flying to New York two days later.

They made a special detour to visit the race and meet Radu, telling him how their chance conversation in the café had led them here. They chatted with Radu and other runners and helpers before continuing on their way.

It is quite an extraordinary story, but then, this is an extraordinary race.

Also over the weekend, a Spanish couple, Ramon Lopez Mendizabal and his wife, went out of their way to visit the race, and they too chatted with Radu.
