Sri Chinmoy - Race Founder

Sri Chinmoy (1931-2007), dedicated his life to fostering peace, starting in the heart of each individual. He felt that peace could be manifested through silent meditation, music, poetry, art - and sports.

He especially had a fondness for running and felt that running provided an excellent opportunity for people to challenge themselves and overcome their pre-conceived limitations – what he referred to as self-transcendence.

The idea of self-transcendence is a cornerstone of Sri Chinmoy’s philosophy. In his own words:

"Self-transcendence gives us joy in boundless measure. When we transcend ourselves, we do not compete with others. We do not compete with the rest of the world, but at every moment we compete with ourselves." (source)

The 3100 mile race is the longest of several ultra-marathons and other running races founded by Sri Chinmoy. It is an outgrowth of his philosophy and is the ultimate field for self-transcendence – challenging and overcoming the entire world’s pre-conceived notions of possibility.
