Andrea reaches 2,000 miles
Video by Arpan
Late in the evening yesterday, Andrea Marcato reached the 2,000-mile point. It is the seventh time he has passed this extraordinary milestone.
He did it in 28 days, 14 hours, 50 minutes and 52 seconds. This is almost a day quicker than his time last year of 29 days, 12 hours, 36 minutes and 31 seconds, but slower than his 2,000-mile time of 27 days, 6 hours, 24 minutes and 13 seconds from 2023 (TBC).
It is one of many statistics that this fascinating race throws up. Even a runner taking part in their local marathon each year may see a few minutes' difference in their time from one year to the next. The difference in performances is indicative of how challenging any distance event is, and of the many variables a runner faces each year. In the 3,100, these differences are simply magnified by the extreme nature of the event. Are the runners bothered by these little mind games about how fast someone can run 2,000 miles? Not at all! Andrea and all the 3,100-mile runners acknowledge that "it is what it is" and just crack on!
Conditions yesterday continued to be challenging, bordering on brutal, with heavy rain and winds making the runners' efforts even more remarkable.
The race has now been under way for just over four weeks, since 30th August. In that time, in the track and field world, we have seen:
- Records set at the Diamond League final in Brussels on 4th/5th September
- More records set at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest on 11th/12th September
In the ultra world:
- Megan Eckert broke the world six-day record in Hungary on 9th September
- Charlie Lawrence and Courtney Olsen claimed the IAU World 100km titles in Spain on 20th September
All the while, our nine runners have been steadily logging the miles to reach day 29 of the 3,100-Mile Race. National records at 1,000 miles and upwards continue to be set, and our volunteer crew keep turning up in all weathers to help keep the show on the road.
Yesterday's race in numbers

- As well as passing 2,000 miles, Andrea Marcato went on to record 60.8 miles for the day, with an overall total of 2,010.4 miles.

- Radu Budan recorded 61.9 miles, leaving him with a total of 1,929.8 miles.
