Day 17: The Longest Race Continues To Test

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
30 August

Day 17,  September15, 2023

As expected, Vasu Duzhiy reached the 1000 mile mark first, reaching it in 16 days+03:03:38. Nina (Yang Huang-Lan), was the next runner to get to 1000 miles in 16days+14:59:58. Harita Davies was soon to follow in 16days+15:20:14. The fourth and final runner to make the split was Mahasatya Janczak, who touched the 1000 for the first time in his running life- in 16days+16:23:03.

The leaders continued to move along,, as Andrea went past 72. Miles, and touched the 2000km mark in 16:17:08:15- nearly six hours faster than his best mark from last year. Wei-Ming Lo is placing himself solidly in third overall, and he is reaching 100km and more every day

so far.

Tomorrow Kaneenika Janakova, Milan Javornicki, and Jason Lester should all make the 1000- mile mark a reality. The pleasant and cooler temps are giving the runners a chance to do well, lest the hurricane season emerges in the North East of the US.

Day 24:The Kids Are Alright

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
30 August

As expeckted, Tsai Wen-Ya passed a mark of 2500km in a tremendous effort, reaching that mark in 23 days+ 02:59:13, a 32-hour improvement in Suprabha Beckjord’s work from 1998 in a summer warm spell. What is less known is that Wen-Ya also passed the 1600 mile mark set by Kaneenika Janakova from Slovakia- later this evening(set in 2017 in 25:07:16:22) which was done in 23 days +14:52:23 (to be verified). Wen-Ya ran 68.6 miles today, and it was good to have a good day today, for a tropical storm in the nearby ocean areas just outside Jamaica and Queens in general will be hit with 4 to 6 inches of rain and strong winds in the next two days or so. We shall see what happens. Stay dry people of Queens, New York.

Day 7: Summer Has Come Back For a Week

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
30 August

Day 7, September 5, 2023

The summer season is still touching the New York area with intense heat, and the possibility of hurricanes pushing up the coast, if the worse things might happen. However, the super-long distance runners are just taking one day at a tine. Andrea Marcato,  Italy’s hero, and Taiwan’s new distance speedster Tsai Wen-Ya retained their first and second places. No surprise in third overall, in 92º heat, Wei-Ming Lo moved in the common position, reaching 68 miles and smiling over his movement through the heat.  Mahasatya Janczak from Poland, and Adrian Papuc  from Romania withheld their fourth and fifth positions, and seemed smooth throughout the boiling afternoon heat.

Tomorrow supposedly will be very hot, with temps moving into 95º and more difaculties. After the two approaching heat days, cooler temps and rain will replace the mid-summer tests.

Day 18 The Race Continues

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
30 August

Day 18, September 16, 2023

Three runners reached the 1000 Mile Mark today. Kaneenika Janakova was the first to lead the list: 1000 miles = 17days+08:53:09. Then Jason Lester reached his first official 1000 Mile Mark- 17Days+09:17:32. The third runner to get the Kilo mark was Milan Javornicky- 17Days+09:39:05. There might be two more runners to gain a 1000 mark- Stutisheel Lebedev and Adrian Papuc. Tomorrow.

Mean while, the overall leader Andrea Marcato reached 1300 miles today, in 17 days+14:02:39- His previous best was 18:00:21:31 last year. The 1300 Miler used to be our longest distance race- from 1987 to 2004. But by then, the 3100 Mile Race eventually became our flagship event, as the 1300 mile race, the 1000 mile races, and the 700 Mile Race had provided our distance trio, and had superb performances during its useful tests of the long, longer and longest events. Now we are at the 27th edition of the 3100 Mile Race, and The Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team is always grateful that the runners retain their abilities and desire to test themselves- sometimes over and over again. The Races still continue due to both the runners and our remarkable members of the Team- due to Sri Chinmoy and his vision. It is quite a way to pass the days, months and years of the races.

Day 8: How to Overcome the Difficult

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
30 August

Day 8, September 6-23

The very warm and inhuman weather today tried to slow everyone down, but the strong and remarkable runners continued their quest to challenge all things in front of them.  Whether it was distance to conquer, the stiff sidewalks to tread, the unless food and drink to be absorbed , and the need for the body to stop and relax when anything too long is more trouble to overcome.

93º to 95º temps all over the area around the slightly longer than half a mile, with traffic and trucks rolling by on the north side of the course- these things are just part of the distraction that is the

3100 Mile Race.not to mention the course changes direction every day.

The Day 8  Race resulted in several runners continuing their best available efforts.. The overall leader Andrea Marcato reached  614.2 miles to extend his lead to nearly 50 miles over Tsai Wen-Ya who continued to lead the women with 564.8 miles. Wei-Ming Lo remained solid in third place, reaching 517.8 miles. Mahasatya Janczak held fouth place with 506.7 miles. Vasu Duzhiy and Adrian Papuc held fifth and sixth with 502 miles and inches apart from each other.  With one more hot day, the runners have nearly overcome the first test . We will see how they will shine- inside and outside.

30 August

Day 12 September 10, 2023

Andrea Marcato worked hard to overcome a few rain storms that pumled the area, both in the late morning, and then last night, as storms continued to test the runners of the 3100 Mile Race.

Mr Marcato reached 898.29 miles,  having remained  nearly 68 miles  ahead of Tsai Wen-Ya, who reached 830.29 miles, and easily leads the total of five women who are maintaining their running tests on the daily basis of searching for more than 59.618 miles per day, needed to acquire the 3100 Mile Race to finish in the 52 day framework.  Taiwan male hero distance runner Wei-Ming Lo totaled 769.96 miles in a dozen days to hold his effort to third overall.

10-time finisher Vasu Duzhiy, a three-time winner of the longest race, has helped his position to stay at fourth overall, with a good effort of 742.54 miles. He needed to maintain the position because of the steady serge from Nina Cook, the lady who has put the pressure on other runners  as she is the third Tiawanese to attempt the longrst race.

30 August

Day 14, September 13, 2023

Andrea Marcato, the 41 year old Italian who has dominated the previous three versions of the Sri Chinmoy 3100 Mile Race, pasted the 1000 mile mark in a personal best of 13 Days+07:12:25, the tenth best performance on a road course in long distance history. He pasted his own best by nearly nine hours, and seemed ready to continue his efforts as there are still 2,100 miles to be covered before his efforts are complete.

Tomorrow, on Wednesday, the Taiwanese woman Tsai Wen-Ya, currently in second overall, should finish her first 1000 Mile performance. We will see another great performance in the worlds  longest race, although there may be more rain showers on Wednesday morning from 6:00am to midday. We shall see. Wen-Ya has 33.5 miles to reach the 1000 mile mark.

The 27th Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race Day 1

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
30 August

The 27th Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race was encouraged by enthusiastic supporters, eager to see 14 runners begin the worlds longest footrace, on the famous block with just over a half a mile long, course. It was amazing to see over 200 people, friends and fun seacures, rise and shine before 6am eastern savings time.

The recent three time winner of this event, Andrea Marcato from Italy, wanted no time in running to the forefront, led by Taiwanese hero Wei-Ming Lo, the Asian record holder and national hero. Nine men garnered the male contingent, while five women filled out the group, lend by novice starter Tsai Wen-Ya. Her steady and smooth style paid off immensely as a three hour rain shower subsided, and bright sunshine took over sunny skies.

Those runners that stayed the longest gained the highest place on the first day of effort. The newer athletes did not suffer or regret the fading summer airs.

Andrea Marcato posted the highest perch with a 88.298 miles / 142.044 km day.

Vasu Duzhiy, the 10-time finisher and three time winner of this event, scored another solid opening day, equalled by the Taiwanese hero Wei-Ming Lo, as both men reached 77.325246 miles / 124.442 km efforts.

Adian Papuc from Romania equalled the 77 mile mark as the spray men were accompanied with the new woman on the block, as Wen-Ya Tsai from Tiawan topped 76.22848 miles / 122 km to slipped into fifth position, and was not afraid of anyone or anything.

The slowest runners still raced 65.8 miles.

What a way to start the day.

Andrea Marcato arrived at his halfway mark in 21:03:38:40 miles on Wednesday morning. It was his fastest halfway. He continued to keep it going continuesly, reaching over three straight days with over 71 miles.

Tsai Wen-Ya is establishing some new women’s best results for partial distances. Friday morning she will most likely pass one of the great woman distance runners, who happen’s to be the American All-Time great Suprabha Beckjord, who reached 2500 km in 24:11:11:31.  As many people know about Suprabha, she was a 13-time finisher of the 3100 Mile Race, and held the fastest time for women for 17 years- this was in 1998.

With just two days to go, there is no let-up in the intensity for the runners as the remaining participants seek to fulfil their goals. Leading woman Susan Marshal had the day's top mileage with 64 miles. It leaves her needing just 63 miles to complete the 3100 Miles and the prospect of a possible finish late Monday evening (estimated finish time 11.00p m). Stutisheel also managed 62 miles which leaves him set to finish on the last day.

In the last week of the race, Huang Lan Yang has been hampered by a knee injury. It means she will not quite be able to finish the 3100 Miles but she continues to do what she can and happily stays on the course. Video in slideshow of passing 2,900 miles

Vasu is an exemplary presence at the 3100 Mile Race. The quiet and modest runner is frequently seen spending time to encourage other runners who are going through difficult periods. It is his tenth finish from ten starts. He has won the race on three occasions.
