Around the block in 52 days

About the author:

Article from Dagens Næringsliv (Norway largest daily business newspaper), published on 9th August, 2014. The following is a translated excerpt (thanks to Premananda for the English translation):

Queens boiled and steamed in 35 degrees. A quick sprint to the subway and the clothes could be wrung up. Most people preferred cooled of air inside cars and buildings. Those outside, sagged slowly along the streets or were drowsing away in the shadows.

But in a living area in the borough of Queens three women and eleven men were running. Up 84th Avenue.  Across 168th Street. Along the highway Grand Central Parkway. Down 164th Avenue. A rectangle of 883 meter around a fenced in high school, a soccer field and a playground.

Then they did it again. And again. And again and again. From 6 am until midnight. For 52 days in a stretch they were running, with change of direction every morning for the sake of some variation, on a sidewalk cast of concrete - much harder than asphalt.

They started on June 15th. When the organizers drew the line on Tuesday this week, eight of the runners had completed the required 5000km. In spite of injuries, illness and horrible blisters: none had broken along the way. None had taken even a single day off.

"The marathon is the equivalent of running from New York to Los Angeles (2,700 miles), and then going another 400 miles north to San Francisco just for kicks. The race was inspired by spiritual leader Sri Chinmoy, who believed long-distance running can help people overcome their preconceived limitations." read more »

“I see them running every day and I think, ‘These people never sleep,’” said Rashdeep Singh, who lives nearby. The runners go from 6 a.m. to midnight, pausing for meals in plastic cups, water and a fresh pair of shoes. Before the race ends next week, each will have exhausted about 25 pairs. read more »

Our interactive daily graphs on the homepage were inspired by the graphs that Matthias van Baaren from Vienna has been sending us since the beginning of the race (he also sent us the fun Chicken Run graphic from a couple of weeks ago). We havent been able to get around to putting them all up, but here are some graphs from day 42 just to give you an idea. Thank you very much Matthias!

Consistency and recovery are the hallmarks of a multiday runner. Sarvagata Ukrainskyi has embodied those qualities vividly as he dominates the 3100 Mile Race. His 495+ mile week again is strong and consistent, topped off by a magnificent 81.2 mile day to end the week. William Sichel is showing his toughness as he has climbed to within only 13 laps of eighth place, and more importantly, only 25 laps more to make up to become level with necessary daily mileage. He has come back from 80+ miles below the standard to just over 12 miles- and still looking strong. Sarah Barnett continues to lead the ladies with her 61.7 miles a day average.

'Chicken Run' - a fun illustration of how far the 3100 Mile runners have come!

About the author:

Nirbhasa is from Ireland. He is an enthusiastic multi-day runner, having completed four times the Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race - the longest race in the world.

It's hard to grasp the magnitude of 3100 Mile race. Fortunately, the town of Chicken, Alaska (population 17) happens to lie exactly 3100 miles away from the finish line in Queens NY. So if the race were to start in Chicken and finish in New York, how far would the runners be towards their goal today? Currently they are on day 28 out of 52.

3100 Mile Race 2014, WEEK 4: July 6 to July 12, 2014

Medur is our go-to person for many of the essential tasks involved in putting on our races: race setup, our lap counting system and our website. An enthusiastic runner himself, he has participated in many editions of the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run in Canada and the US.

Sarvagata Ukrainski amazes because of his high level of consistency within the race. He reached 496+ miles this week averaging 70.87 miles per day. He has gained a few miles more each of the first four weeks. The average daily high temperature for the week did not exceed 87ºF, but the humidity index has gone up. Yuri Trostenyuk, Vasu Duzhiy and William Sichel have all made gains in their weekly totals, and Sarah Barnett and Jayasalini Olga Abramovskikh have held their form and consistency throughout the week. Everyone looks thinner and fitter, but with three and a half weeks to go a runner has to maintain bodyweight for the last push to the finish.

About the author:

Medur is our go-to person for many of the essential tasks involved in putting on our races: race setup, our lap counting system and our website. An enthusiastic runner himself, he has participated in many editions of the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run in Canada and the US.

The following charts were created using the Microsoft Excel charting tool,   As such they are static images in jpeg format.  I am happy to be able to provide live dynamic charts on the home page of this site, or here in full screen format.  The new format is hopefully more informative and is certainly easier to maintain.

The Relative Place chart displays the relative position of the runners as a percentage of the total combined cumulative distance run each day relative to the cutoff.  The cutoff is the distance required to finish the race within the official race duration of 52 days.

The Daily Splits chart plots the actual daily mileage of each runner.

The Progress Chart displays the distance covered to date in blue with the remaining distance required in red.  The vertical dotted line indicates the cutoff.

3100 Mile Race 2014, Week 3: June 29 to July 5, 2014

The third week mirrored resolve and determination as 12 of the fourteen have gone past the 1000 mile barrier.  Sarvagata Ukrainskyi continues to dominate the field while reaching 491 miles for the week.  He is averaging just under 70 miles per day(112.5 km), and should hit the halfway point Monday afternoon. Hurricane Arthur touched the area with its outer reaches, but sticky, rainy, windy conditions could not stop the runners. Nearly the whole group is staying to the midnight bell each day to gain maximum mileage. Sarah Barnett still leads the women’s side and is averaging 62.5 miles per day (100.6 km).

The burden of high mileage, less sleep, physical  and mental discomfort and a tough running surface takes its toll on nearly everyone in the 3100 Mile Race. Sarvagata Ukrainskyi was able to punch out a better week than the first one as his fitness level spiraled up to 495+ miles. He is averaging 69.8 miles per day(112.36 km). He reached 1000 miles (14 days+06:15:54). Yuri Trostenyuk remains in second at 936.3 miles. Sarah Barnett continues to lead the ladies by over 30 miles, and looks focused and fit. In all, eleven of the fourteen starters are still on pace for a finish, with many more miles to go. The local schools are out for summer vacation, but the classroom at the 3100 Mile race is always open.

The 12 daring ultrarunners taking on the world's longest certified ultra race are enduring high heat and humidity as the race heads to day 31 on Tuesday July 16.  There is a very "cool" (both in temperature and degree of cleverness and originality) refrigerator trailer parked at the race course.  This was created many years ago by world-class carpenter/ inventor (also associate race RD) Bipin Larkin and some of his co-workers.  Side panels open outward to reveal large refrigerated compartments in which all manner of food and drinks-- from yogurt to ice cream to soda pop to non-alcoholic beers (city and park ordinances prohibit alcoholic beverages) are stored.  There are other compartments in the trailer for dry goods, fruits, snacks, etc.

Here are the race standings after day 29 (Sunday):

1.  Asprihanal Pekka Aalto   (67.51 for day),     1,991,05 total.

2.  Dr. Atmavir Petr Spacil    (62.51)                1,937.26

3.  Vasu Duzhiy                       (64.21)                1,902.69

4.  Chef Sarvagata Ukrainskyi (68.05!)               1,882.38

5.  Pranjal Milovnik                  (62.56)                 1,845.61

6.  Yuri Trostenyuk                   (61.47)                 1,825.86

7.  Sopan Tsekov                    (57.63)                 1,703.48

8.  Baladev Pavel Saraz, Esq. (56.52)               1,631.58

9.  Coach Ananda-Lahari Zuzcin (47.19)                1,617.31

Women:

1.  Surasa P. Mairer           (61.47)                       1,792.93

2.  Nidhdruvi Zimmerman   (62.01)                       1,726.52

3.  Sarah Barnett                 (43.91)                       1,515.24

I will post more news and updates in a few days-- I am off to the northern New Hampshire wilderness leading a group of 8-10 year old girls over various remote peaks.  Even the TOUGH runners in the 3100 get to sleep in cozy BEDS in air-conditioned apartments and houses, whereas I will be sleeping on rocky ground on my foam pad.

REMEMBER that you may check out all the 3100 mile action at:

CHEER on the runners (send them e-mail greetings, phone them, send post cards-- they will remember you forever!)

Writer-philosopher "Guru" Sri Chinmoy opined that "encouragement points the way to the pole-star."  I see the pole star on all non-cloudy nights here, far away from air pollution and city lights.  And when anyone has something nice or encouraging to say to me, I SEE the pole-star that much more clearly.

Best wishes to all ultrarunners around the globe,

Mark D

The afternoon/ dinner team is made up of Manogati who is from Russia. She has worked on our races as an invaluable helper both in medical and as an assistant to fellow Russian participants. She is now in the kitchen as an awesome salad and juice chef where her understanding of the runners needs is very welcome.

The next addition is Irena who is also from the Czech Republic. She is the Chief Dishwasher and Potato peeler. Her help is wonderful and always cheerful. She also is a dab cleaner of floors as well! Her duties do not stop there though...she is a very willing and efficient lap counter for the runners and also will become a helper for Surasa, one of the 3 girl runners we have doing the 3100 mile race.

Nipura who comes from New Zealand is the third person on the team. She has worked on the 6 and 10-Day race in the kitchen for the last 2 years. She is the main cook for the afternoon/dinner shift.

The 3100-mile race has 12 participants. They are from Ukraine, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Austria and Australia.

Nirjharini and Nipura decide the menu for the runners with invaluable input from the rest of the team. We will be sharing with you some of the culinary delights of this 52-day feat.

June 25

The kitchen has been abuzz with getting ready for the start of the 3100-mile race. What with shopping, chopping, prepping, cooking, mixing, blending, stirring and slicing we have been busy compiling ideas and recipes for the 12 runners who are going to be participating in this immortal race.

The kitchen team consists of 6 girls, who come from different parts of the world. First up is the ever willing and awesome Nirjharini. She is one of the main chefs from our beautiful cafe/restaurant in Oslo, The Fragrance of the Heart. She is an amazingly gifted and dynamic individual who runs the kitchen with a sweet, funny and caring attitude. She is in charge of the early morning breakfast/lunch crew.

Second up is the one, the only.... Tanuja! Tanuja hails from the Czech Republic. She is an accomplished restaurant worker who has, over many years, worked all over the world, helping to nurture and nourish people from all walks of life. She is so witty and smart with kindness and compassion thrown into the mix. She is an awesome addition to the morning team and is a hard and capable worker.

We are so lucky to have Tejini, who has been an invaluable help in the mornings. Tejini comes from Germany and is helping in the kitchen part time while also helping with counting the runners laps. Her cheerful, bright persona is very appreciated and enjoyed by us all. She is an accomplished cook in the race kitchen as she has helped in many past years.

The morning shift consists of a snack at 6am ish when the runners start their day, breakfast at 8am, which is an accomplished feat in itself. The runners all have individual needs for the first big meal of the day and they vary from kitchoury to scrambled eggs to fresh fruit salad and Greek salad with other variations in between. There are unique requirements for these extremely unique individuals.
At 10am there is another snack and then at midday there is lunch.
A lot of organization and planning goes into the preparation of all the meals and we try to vary the protein/carbohydrate combinations. There is always fresh fruit and smoothies, rehydrating drinks plus both sweet and savory food items.
It is a lot of fun and we have heaps of laughs.

Tomorrow will be the next installment where we cover the afternoon/evening shift.

Hasta la vista

There are probably very few places in the world-- yes-- the whole WORLD-- where an ultra runner can go out to eat with a runner from the other side of the globe, and get waited on by a world class, world-record holding ultra runner.  But that is what happened Thursday night as Australia's Sarah Barnett invited my family and moi out to eat at the famous Annam Brahma restaurant in posh Jamaica Hills, New York City.  Our server turned out to be USA record-holder (6 days, etc.) Dipali Cunningham!  Both the food and service were great (NFI).

Prior to eating out, my family and Sarah had gone to a nearby Sports Authority where they definitely had many more serious running shoes than most such "box stores" I have visited.  I would guesstimate Sarah put in 1.5 miles (over the course of 2 hours) as she tried on dozens and dozens of models of shoes.  Like many serious multi-day runners, she was trying to find a shoe with SUPPORT but that did not weight a ton or was not too hard or stiff.  The top two injuries in multi-days, shin and achilles problems, are hastened by the three arches in the foot collapsing.  Minimal shoes are wonderful in their place, but even the most devout minimalists have been seen switching to more supportive shoes after several days and hundreds of miles.

Sarah and I both ended up buying similar shoes (I am not running the 3100 mile, but am trying to train 10 miles most days while working in Vermont)-- also similar to what some of the other top 3100 runners are wearing:  Brooks Glycerin/ Adrenaline/ etc., Saucony Hurricane and Guide, Mizuno Inspire/ Wave Rider, plus a few others which escape my limited memory at the moment.  The young sales woman was amazed to have a famous runner from Australia in the store, and to see how much she ran and ran while trying on all these shoes!

Another young local Queens woman, this one working the desk at the motel we stayed at, knew about the world's longest ultra that circles an 890 meter loop of Edison School and Austin Park.  Again, this is a unique city in that people on the street who are not runners will know about the 3100 mile (and nearby 6 and 10 day held in April), YET these new Yorkers do not know about Western States, Hardrock, leadville, and other such "holy grails" of many US trail specialists.

My family and I checked out the 3100 course briefly, and were surprised to see race entrants out training on the course!  I guess that even in such a long race on a short loop, course familiarity (and seeing which shoes feel best on the generally rock hard surface) helps.

Will try to post intermediate reports the next few weeks, though it will be tough as I am working way out in the woods in Vermont, far from the Internet and the ultra world (but just 280 miles due north of the 3100 mile course!)

Best wishes to all ultrarunners around the globe-- and everyone, no matter where you are, think of the valiant 3100 mile (5000Km) entrants as they start their journey Sunday morning.
