Run, Rest, Run

A quick look at some of the sights around the 'camp' as the runners spend the day running, eating and a bit of resting. This is where the runners get their credit for another lap completed, food and drink, support from helpers and well-wishers, and a good rest now and then during the day. In the evening people gather to spend the last hours of the night socializing as they support the runners trying to reach their quota of the goals they set for themselves. FInally, it is time to leave by midnight, or earlier if they wish, and get some solid sleep until 6:00 the next morning when they begin again.

Day 16 The weather cooperated again today as the entire field reached at least 58+ miles each. Four stalwarts made it past 70 miles, led again by the power trio at the top- Ashprihanal Aalto(75.18); Atmavir Petr Spacil (70.24); and Galya V. Balatskyy (71.34). Vasu Duzniy climbed into the 70's club again today with 71.34, and Yuri Trostenyuk was just a lap shy of the club with 69.68. The overall improved fitness and good running weather allowed fine performances for the day. Stutisheel Lebedyev went past the 1000 mile split for the eleventh time in as many years. First timer Nirbhasa Magee thrilled everyone and the folks at home with his first-time past the kilo mile mark. Only four laps separate the distaff race as Surasa Mairer is running a solid race with her younger competitor-friend, Kaneenika Janakova, inching a little closer with a 63.66 mile effort.

Day 15 The third week began with humid, wet conditions from the leftovers of the rainstorms Saturday evening. Mist descended onto the racecourse but few drops fell and temps stayed cool. The coolest customer was Ashprihanal Aalto who sported a foreign legion hat turned sideways and a grin as the laps cascaded before him. He totalled 77.92 miles and continued an epic performance. Not to be outdone, Atmavir Petr Spacil and Galya Balatskyy continued their own streaks of 15 consecutive days over 70 miles each day. Yuri Trostenyuk passed the 1000 mile mark for the third straight year, with a PB by 10 hours. Vasu Duzhiy in fifth place joined the over 70 mile club again with 71.34, whilst also reaching past the 1000 mark 29 hours faster than he has ever run it. Stutisheel Lebedyev moved into sixth place and was part of the 9 person group who all topped 60 miles. Sadly, Grahak Cunningham had to withdraw due to a hip injury that is arthritic in nature. He had gritted two weeks of pain and swelling before choosing the wise course. He is still ranked third fastest all-time at 3100 miles and is the 2012 champion. He thanks all his friends, family, supporters and well-wishers. Good Luck and Gidday!

Race stories

Good Morning 3100

Having a very international field of runners and helpers is a good way to learn the basics of many languages. Today all the runners and some of the helpers as well offered 'Good Morning' greetings in their native languages. You can see that the runners are quite fresh in the morning and usually moving well. They are also very grateful for all the support they have been getting from helpers, well-wishers and supporters who all make this dream possible for them.

Unfortunately one runner was missing this morning, Grahak, from Australia. Due to a recurring injury which could get very serious it was decided that it was best for him to stop running in the race. The directors of the race do not want serious problems to develop due to the stressful nature of this race, therefore each runner is closely monitored especially when they are experiencing persistent difficulties. We are proud of Grahak, as all the runners, no matter what their end result may be.

The Journey of 1000 Miles-by Arpan

'The journey of 1000 miles begins with one step' is a familiar aphorism which is very apropos to this race, especially today. Late last night Ashprihanal reached the first 1000 miles and it seems like only yesterday the race started with the first steps. Today two more intrepid runners reached 1000 miles, Atmavir and then Galya soon after. On a day where there was no sign of direct sun at all and then rain all evening until the midnight break, there were also two birthdays celebrated on the course. Tanuja, one of Kaneenika's helpers, had a colorful cake and birthday song. Sanatan, whose service to the race has been very reliable and regular to the race on the weekends, took a more quite and modest birthday approach. Grahak took some time off the course to visit a doctor to check out a persistent hip problem which we hope won't deter his efforts to continue on.

Day 14 Two weeks have come to an end, but the 3100 Mile Race moves along. Eight runners passed the 60 mile barrier, with three of the usual suspects reaching 70 miles or more. The forecasted rain moved into the area, with drenching showers lasting past the midnight hour. Still, the runners moved along. Ashprihanal Aalto still amazes, as he reached 77.38 miles today, defying the buffets of wind and rain. At present he is averaging 77.22miles (124.28 km). Atmavir Petr Spacil is averaging 73.65 miles(118.54 km) in second place; Galya V, Balatskyy is reaching 73.26 per day in third(117.91 km). Yuri Trostenyuk is averaging 69.87 miles( 112.44 km) in fourth. The ladies are both above 60+ miles per day, Surasa Mairer leading overr Kaneenika Janakova by a scant four laps.

Farewell Pradeep-by Arpan

Every day on this adventure has special moments. Some of those moments involve welcoming new friends and helpers and some days we have to say good-bye to friends or helpers who usually have to get back to work. Pradeep has been devotedly helping Nirbhasa daily since the race began. Unfortunately today he had to leave for home in the Netherlands. In this brief interview while running we hear a few encouraging comments from Pradeep and Nirbhasa just before Pradeep went to the airport. We are very grateful to Pradeep for his encouraging and invaluable assistance. He, like all the other handlers and helpers, help make this unbelievably long race possible for the runners.

Day 13  Ten of the 'Terrific12' made it past sixty miles. The weather cooperated, with average humidity, some breezes and later cloud cover. Temps never went past 80ºF. Four intrepid runners pushed past seventy miles. Messrs Atmavir Petr Spacil and Galya Balatskyy continued their elite consistency with each day over seventy miles. Vasu Duzhiy kept his modest streak of three days over 70 going, but the leader of the pack-Ashprihanal Aalto- again established his excellence with a 77.92 mile day. He topped 1000 miles again(12 days+17:19:40), his time placing on the all-time 1000 mile list at 8th best road performance ever, and 15th over all surfaces. He is averaging a sparkling 77.21 miles per day(124.26 km). Surasa Mairer has rebounded well from stomach issues to actually pass Kaneenika Janakova by three laps. Both women are creating a small but growing comfort zone of mileage as the race nears two weeks. The 'breaking in' period appears almost over. It is time to move along or step aside. Good luck to all runners testing themselves with challenges.

Day 12 Moderate temps and cloud cover offered runners a chance to enhance their placings and fitness in the 52-day race. Atmavir Petr Spacil and Galya Balatskyy led the fray at the front, again posting over 70+ miles each for the 12th consecutive day. Russian Vasu Duzhiy made a run late, however, to garner day leader honors and move back into fifth place with a 72.44 mile day. Ashprihanal Aalto felt the effects of his torrid first 11 days. In wisdom he dialed it back to conserve energy and finished just under 60 miles. Both ladies ran well, particularly after sundown, as their fitness is appearing more frequently. Kaneenika Janakova leads Surasa Mairer by four laps, but the best news is that both are above the line of needed mileage for a veritable finish. In all, seven runners made it past 60 miles. There is still a long way to go.

Full Time Helpers-by Arpan

Two of the many full time helpers were on hand today to explain some of the many tasks necessary to keep this race and the runners running smoothly. There are many people behind the scenes who help to administer the very complex logistics of the longest certified footrace in the world. The following video is just a tip of the iceberg to give a taste of life on the 'block', as they say here at the 3100 mile race.

Day 11  Weather is good- humidity low, air clear. Let's run. That is what they did. Five slid past 70 miles and nine of the 12 went past 60+. It is a sight to see- runners moving at a good clip, their fitness seemingly gaining, their resolve steadfast. When the dust settled Ashprihanal Aalto led again with 77.9; Atmavir Spacil slammed 75.18; Galya Balatskyy ran 72.99;Vasu Duzhiy ignited for 73.5; and Grahak Cunningham shuffled to 70.24 miles. Surasa Mairer climbed back into the fray with 65.3- a welcome site after nearly three days adrift with GI issues. We have six full weeks left. Anything can happen. But I like the chances of the top ten moving forward. Stay tuned!

Birthday on the Run- by Arpan

Having a birthday during the 3100 mile race can be quite exciting. Customized cakes, lots of enthusiastic helpers singing the birthday songs, and lots of hungry runners to happily devour the cake are all part of the birthday celebrations. Today was the first exciting birthday celebrations of one of the full-time helpers, Dan, from Seattle. We also can get an in depth look at the 3100 Race Kitchen once more as they prepare the special cake and other gourmet goodies.

Cheerfulness Triumphs-by Arpan

In this ever-moving adventure everyone is finding their pace and dealing with their own challenges daily. Surasa has had some health setbacks but perseveres cheerfully as she stays the course and continues on confidentally. In this short but uplifting interview Surasa mentions her main setback but displays the cheerful courage which has taken her through three of these epic adventures.

Day 10   In a imaginary blink of an eye, we have seen 10 days of the 3100. Four intrepid runners are averaging over 70 miles a day. Yuri Trostenyuk sits in fourth place with 704.11 miles, his determination resolute and his smile simmering just below the stoic gaze. Third place for the moment belongs to Galya V. Balatskyy, his gait strong and his effort powerful and confident. He has displayed his best start in this race ever(738.68 miles), with nary a weakness or flaw- cheerfulness rests just below his smooth effort. Second place is in the capable hands and legs of Atmavir Petr Spacil. He is moving along with determination and tremendous conviction in his ability. Like Galya, Atmavir has run every day of the first ten with over 70 miles on his scorecard(745.27 miles). Leading the group of 12 is Finland's hero-runner of the long races- Ashprihanal Aalto- who has amassed 788.07 miles in 10 days. He has seen every type of race in his 12 summers here on the block. The race he is compiling is without a doubt his best effort by far. The only question is can he stay healthy and keep moving along. The other members of the field also possess tremendous attributes, but the spotlight for the first week and a half is on the speed boys. They can help everyone with their energy. Only time will tell us the outcome. Stay tuned my friends, this race could be the best ever!!

700 Miles-by Arpan

As the second week is underway and runners are acclimating to their new lifestyle, the race goes on with many helpers, counters, cooks, and spectators offering support and encouragement. At the end of the day the results board is the main center of focus to see the progress the runners have made. Tonight Asphprihanal reached 700 miles as others are approaching that auspicious number.

Day 9 The saga continued as the runners dealt with a warm but less humid day, topping off around 88ºF(29C). Ashprihanal Aalto continued his assault with another 78.4 mile day. He was even clicking off 6:00 minute laps for the last hour or so. Atmavir Petr Spacil was almost as dominant with another 74.6 mile day. Galya Balatskyy kept his streak at nine straight over 70 days with 71.34 miles, and Stutisheel Lebedyev joined the fray with his first 70.2 miler since Day One. In all, eight runners stayed above 64 miles - very impressive in any weather. Tuesday promises to be hot and sticky before late afternoon thunderstorms but the energy from the top runners will be hard to contain. More later...

Race Director's updates

3100

Week 2 Day 8 On a summer day full of humidity, sunshine, swirling winds, rain episodes and warm temperatures, the field of 12 advanced into the second week. Eight of the group advanced past 60 miles, led by the group of three at the top- Ashprihanal Aalto(78.47), Atmavir Petr Spacil(70.24) and Galya V. Balatskyy(71.34), who reached beyond 70 miles again. They were joined by Grahak Cunningham, who had his best day since Day 1 with 70 miles. Yuri Trostenyuk kept the group in sight with 69.7 miles. These performances by the top five or six must seem a bit intimidating to the rest of the runners as they try to acclimate to high mileage, hard surfaces and approaching summer weather patterns. Overall, nine are on pace to finish, with the rest a few miles behind.

Happy Fathers' Day-by Arpan

More rain welcomed the runners at the start of the second week which happens to be Fathers' Day in the U.S.A.. Light rain is usually welcomed by the runners as it cools things down and keeps the sun and heat away. This morning, as with every morning around 7:00, a group of women singers inspire the runners with uplifting songs. Some of the runners in turn may offer a short funny skit or joke to the singers as they pass by on a lap. The following link is a short video of the singers and runners offering each other some inspiration and laughter.

This video by Arpan can also be viewed on the Video Blog section of the 3100 Mile Race home page.

Day 7    A week has transpired. The runners are feeling the seriousness of the task, but their fitness level is really startng to appear. Ashprihanal Aalto continues to amaze with a 77.3 mile day. He is averaging 79.02 miles for the week, which is his best ever for this race. He is only three laps behind the pace of Madhupran Wolfgang Schwerk, the all-time best record holder for the 3100. Atmavir Petr Spacil moved into second place, snapping a virtual tie from the beginning of the day. Mr. Spacil ran 75.7 miles, five laps ahead of Galya Balatskyy. Both runners have gone over 70 miles on each day of the race so far. They are also at record pace, although it is still early in the event. Grahak Cunningham of Australia is showing better form and has peeled off consecutine 69+ mile days. Kaneenika Janakova has worked her way into ninth place and ahead in the distaff race. Eight of the 12 moved past 60 miles, with the top three over 70. Even Baladev Pavol Saraz had a good day with 100 km and shin splints in his rear view mirror. It is Fathers Day here in the States. Hats off to dads everywhere. And thanks to the Heavenly as well. More later...
