Day 51

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
25 October

Harita Davies, the pride of Christchurch, New Zealand and Jamaica, Queens, New York finished the 3100 Mile Race in 50 days+13:23:14, a personal best and New Zealand national record. She praised her helpers from five various countries, who made a serious commitment to help her get through the difficult event. She also recgnized the pure Grace that is needed to finish such an arduous task. She remains the fifth fastest female to finish the race, and bested her previous mark by 20 hours, 11 minutes.

Takasumi Senoo has only 88 laps, 48.13 miles to reach his goal, and expects to finish between 8:00 and 9:00 pm (20:00 and 21:00 hours). Heavy rains are expected all day Tuesday, so Takasumi will have to have his ancient warrior armour ready for the challenge. Rumor is he is good to very good in the heavy rains and downpours. The other two men-Stutisheel Lebedev and Ananda-Lahari Zuscin will face the music with determination on the final day. The 25th edition of the Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race is near the end, but the journey never stops. Just like the world turns, the sun rises, and mankind ponders its fate, the real meaning of life is probably just- “There is always another race” !! Stay dry folks, and have a pleasant week or month ahead. Peace and Joy.

24 October

The Lion of St Petersburg Russia, Vasu Nikolai Duzhiy, 55, a lumber Company supervisor and extraordinary runner, made it past the 3100 Mile finish line for the ninth time in nine tries. The humble and modest athlete thanked everyone in attendance, after he reached third place.

Mr Duzhiy averaged 62.589 miles/ 100.728km per day, and is still ranked sixth all-time.

Harita Davies had another solid performance and is poised to finish on Monday between 6:30 and 7:45 local time. She is well ahead of her personal best from 2019. Takasumi Senoo will reach that elusive finish line Tuesday evening, after a remarkable effort and even longer journey to get to New York.

Day 49

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
23 October

Fifty-seven year-old Taiwan runner Lo Wei-Ming finished the 25th Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race today in stylish fashion, reaching the goal in 48 days+11:52:01. Mr Lo, who is an athletic icon back in Taiwan, expressed sincere gratitude to all that helped or supported him. He ran with such ability and talent, that he finished in second place overall, becoming the 50th person to ever complete the 3100 distance, and the first Asian to reach the goal. A crowd of over 200 people came to see the great runner fulfill his dreams to run the longest race. After Wei-Ming completed the extra laps to reach 5000km, he had a conference call with the Prime Minister of Taiwan and other officials. Three runners still await their chance to hear the bells in their honor.

Day 48

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
22 October

Wei-Ming Lo wasted little time this past morning and evening, garnering 68.0512 miles/ 109.5177km, and placing himself only 82 laps (45.0016 miles/72.423km) away from his goal of 3100 miles. The Taiwan Ambassador to the USA made a brief appearance to wish Mr Lo well. Wei-Ming has been a real ambassador for the sport of super-long distance running, as well as for his Taiwan heritage and community. He should finish on Saturday by 6:00 pm (1800 hours) and will be honored by nearby Taiwanese people who have emigrated to the US, as well as those from the Taiwan running community. There are other surprises in store as we await this great second place runner, followed by three other finishes in the next four days. Stay tuned folks.

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
21 October

We are sorry for the downtime of the web cams, but the problem has been resolved, and the cameras are back in use. There are four runners expected to finish- one on each evening- starting with Saturday at 6:00pm local time. Wei-Ming Lo hopes to reach his goal and honor his native Taiwan with a second-place finish overall. About a day later, Vasu Duzhiy will cross the finish line for the ninth time in his remarkable career. Harita Davies will finish on Monday near or past the dinner hour, reaching her third finish. On the last day, Takasumi Senoo will reach the finish line as the first Japanese runner to complete the distance. Today’s Day Leader honor was a virtual tie between Harita Davies and Takasumi Senoo at 61.46 miles/ 98.91km. Five days remain for the runners to fulfill their dreams, or keep their inner promise to stay the course.

Day 46

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
20 October

The six remaining runners are carrying the heavy load of expectation, if not the combined feeling of- ‘when will this end’-syndrome. Yet, they are focused, and able to smile or joke, or accept the outer defeat of time. There is inner poise in all who endure the long races. It is not an ‘escape from the world’ that fuels the multi-day racer, but rather an exploration of both the inner and outer world. The athletes who attempt the 3100 might reach for the stars, but the discovery of who they are is by far the more valuable trait to be revealed.

Wei-Ming Lo passed 2900 miles and is focused on Saturday at 6:00 pm (18:00 hours) for his arrival at the finish line. The Taiwanese gentleman has really been a revelation throughout this race, and his dreams are to be reached, or revealed. 172+ miles remain before his journey will end. Carry on, runners- it is only a matter of time.

Day 45

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
19 October

Wei-Ming Lo has impressed everyone with his gentle humor, grace under pressure, and most definitely- his running abilities and smooth running gait. He is 232.52 miles away from his date with running destiny on Saturday. He hopes to finish the 3100 Mile Race by 600pm local time (1800 hours). Today was a business-as-usual effort, interspersed with speed laps and complete control of his effort / journey. By 1100pm he was ready to call it a day.

Mr Lo was upstaged by one man today, who was due for an eye-opener of famous late race secret plans which showcase his talent. Ananda-Lahari Zuscin ran 76.83 miles/ 123.65km. to wow the visitors or onlookers. He is a wonderful talent, regardless of whether he should be doing better than what we see sometimes. Harita Davies is also tearing up her personal best results with each day remaining. Vasu Duzhiy will finish Sunday, Harita nearly a day later than Vasu, and Takasumi Senoo will bring up the rest on Tuesday evening.

Day 44

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
18 October

Today was like double jeopardy all day. After Andrea Marcato’s tremendous finish late the night before, and a return today for the 13 laps to the magical 5000km split (optional), the air was let out of the running course, and Mother Nature whacked the course and its  inhabitants all about, with cold blasts from the north and gusts to over 25MPH.  Energy at Race HQ has dwindled significantly, as Andreas was offering interview after interview on the phone. The remaining Six Starters are still in the game, with four more likely finishers from this group. All of the heroes continue to compete with themselves.

Wei-Ming Lo made it past 2800 miles to position himself for a likely finish on Saturday. Vasu Duzhiy will likely finish his journey on Sunday afternoon, and Harita Davies will reach her goal on Monday, God willing. Takasumi-San Senoo will grind it out until late Tuesday next, before tasting the joys and satisfaction of finishing the longest race.

Day 43: Andrea Marcato Wins Sri Chinmoy 3100 Mile Race

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
17 October

Andrea Marcato, a 39 years old athlete, originally from Dolo Italy, near Venice, won the 25th Annual Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race. He finished in  42 days+17:38:38, a personal best by over 18 hours. Mr Marcato becomes the third fastest runner in the history of this super-long event. He ran 30 straight days in succession at over 70+ miles/ 113 km. He ran exceedingly fast in the last three laps to overtake the previous third place listed runner all-time by a mere 1 minute and 21 seconds. It appears that Andrea has all the tools to dominate the 3100 Mile Race for another decade.

Day 42

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
16 October

It is six weeks into the 3100 Mile Race, and a change of places has not happened, but the singular greatness of Andrea Marcato has dominated the proceedings. Mr Marcato has his sights set on finishing Sunday before 12:00 midnight (24:00), placing him in the rarified air of Day 43. It will require 139 laps- 76.2832 miles / 122.7659km- in order to complete the race. He has a lead over second place of 346 miles. He went through the 3000 mile split nearly 19 hours faster than his victory in Salzburg in 2020.  He pushed through a two –hour rainstorm with changing winds, to make a solid 74.63 miles. Follow the webcam during the day today, for updates on his probable finish.

Takasumi Senoo made it past the 4000km and 2500 mile splits in personal best times. He has a slim but growing cushion of laps, and should finish on the last day.

Day 41

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
15 October

3100 Mile Race history is based on great people doing wonderful performances in all kinds of conditions. Every sport thrives on statistics- …numbers, if you will- that define a level of competency above the regular or medium professional results, which are still above what a normal person could ever do. Day 41 is special, for there is only one competitor who has ever reached this day in the 25 competitions of the event. That position belongs to Ashprihanal Aalto, at the time a 45 -year old delivery man from Vihti, Finland, who ran 3100 miles in 40 days+09:06:21 in 2015. He averaged 76.776 miles/ 123.559 km per day. Unbelievable numbers, considering the heat of summer in New York, plus the Thomas Edison Career and Technical School was having its roof replaced, with scaffolding around nearly 40% of the running course, and heavy machinery buzzing about and over the sidewalk running track.

The course record will not be broken again this year, but Andrea Marcato, the Italian wunderkind, is putting up stellar numbers to join in the conversation of best of the best runners. Today he went for 74.0880 miles/119.2339km- his 28th day in a row over 70+ miles. He has all but secured fourth place on the all-time list, and has a chance of procuring third place on the last evening, if it is Sunday, and if he has had two big days in a row of 138 laps. We shall see.

Only three made it past 60+ miles today, as a last-gasp, summer past, warm front visited the area.

Andrea Marcato continued the speed journey phase of his run, adding a third 74.08 miles total (119,23km) in three days, Vasu Duzhiy went past the 4000 km and 2500 mile marks for the ninth time in his 3100 saga.

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
13 October

Six of the seven warrior runners moved past 60 miles today, with the Day Leader Andrea Marcato moving into rarefied air in the 3100 Mile Race. He has run 26 straight days of 70+ miles, reaching 2800 miles and 4500 km just before the midnight hour. His domination of the race to this point is remarkable, if not inspirational. He now has less than 300 miles to reach the finish line.

Second place runner Wei-Ming Lo, the pioneer of Taiwanese and Asian ultra-runners, reached 4000km for the first time in his remarkable running career. Harita Davies is having another excellent race, and is over 17 miles ahead of her pace from 2019. Thirteen days left, and the journey sees light at the end of the tunnel.

Day 38

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
12 October

Almost perfect weather accompanied the runners today, as six went past 60 miles.

Andrea Marcato is accentuating his effort with each step. He surpassed Grahak Cunningham as the fourth fastest runner all-time to reach 2700 miles today, virtually passing Mr C by four hours after the dust settled.  Now with less than 400 miles to go, the Italian runner is planning his lap totals for the push to the finish line.

The 2700 Mile Race was the direct predecessor to the 3100 Mile Race, and lasted just one year in the summer of 1996. Georgs Jermolajevs of Riga, Latvia ran 2700 miles in 40 days +11:49:07 to secure the top step on the podium

The top five at 2700 miles in event history right now:

Day 37

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
11 October

The journey continued for the Seven who dared to do the impossible-   run nearly 60 miles per day for 52 days. Andrea Marcato defies logic, and is getting stronger as the days and weeks move away while the planet rotates around the Sun. Today, 75.18 miles was his bargaining chip. He is now averaging 71.699 miles/ 115.389km per day. His goal is to finish on Sunday, October 17.

Six runners made it past 60 miles, so the cooler weather does have an impact on the runners’ health and ability to sustain any or every speed attempt or quicker pace. All the runners seemed motivated to move, and utilize their fitness while they can.

10 October

Andrea Marcato reached his third best total of laps today- 141- which is a ‘full sheet’ of 77.3808 miles/ 124.5323 km, in the vernacular of 3100 Mile runners. Laps are the real separation from imaginary to real. Each lap is precious to them, as it should be. Like baby steps, the runner makes progress, while recounting his or her steps from previous days. Mr Marcato is making larger increments in his totals, and the streak continues at 23 straight days over 70 miles.

The top six runners all moved past 60 miles. It rained off and on for two hours, but then cooled down the last three hours of the day. Ananda-Lahari Zuscin went past the 2000 Mile mark for the 17th time in his 3100 Mile Race career journey. At midnight began the 24-hour observation of Sri Chinmoy’s passing into Mahasamadhi. The runners will offer their gratitude for being in this remarkable event.

Cheers to ultrarunners everywhere, and feel Peace within and without you.

Day 35: Five Weeks In

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
9 October

Andrea Marcato continues his efforts to find new ways to reach his goals. He is moving with purpose and conviction, and his 70-Mile streak has reached 22 straight days. This evening he topped the 4000km mark nearly eight hours faster than his Salzburg, Austria mark. He reached 2500.33 miles /118.349 km for 35 days- another personal best. His final target is moving into the high rent district of the 3100 Mile Race- legendary performances that the best in the world have offered to us lucky observers. If he maintains his efforts and avoids injury, a new ranking place awaits his finish. Watch for this man to impress you with his power strides and intense focus.

Wei Ming Lo surprised everyone, when, today, before noon, he switched from his famous plastic sandals to a legitimate pair of running shoes.  The almighty sidewalk course would not allow runners to fly by with sandals for the whole event- at least not this time. Still remarkable- nearly 2200 miles running in sandals, with nary a blister or a sore muscle.

Stutisheel Lebedev went past the 2000-mile mark for the 12th time in his remarkable sporting career.

Day 34

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
8 October

The morning weather became warm and sunny, with the temps up to 77ºF and the humidity rising. The afternoon turned a little cloudy, and the air shifted, bringing some relief from the post-summer warmth.  However, the heat could not delay the runners flowing running skills. Six of the seven reached 60- plus miles, with the Race leader Andrea Marcato flipping another 75.185 miles/120.99 km onto his scorecard. Mr Marcato has passed his best times in the super long schedule of the race, including 2400 miles and Day 34 totals. Japanese hero-warrior Takasumi Senoo reached 2000 miles in a faster time than his Athens warm-up race in 2020, just before the pandemic stopped New York City in its tracks. We are grateful to all concerned for the impetus to create new 3100 Mile memories on the same course as always. Carpe Diem!! Oh runners of the 3100 Mile Race.

Day 33

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
7 October

Twenty straight days at the top of the 70+ Club, our leader Andrea Marcato is matching and beating himself from a year ago, when, on a beautiful park setting-course, became the fifth fastest human in the world to run a 3,100 Mile Race. Salzburg, Austria was the setting, mountains and running water, wide open fields, and a vehicle–prohibited course lent the Italian athlete a pathway to greatness. Today, he waxed poetic with his feet and heart, not only maintaining a 70-mile streak, but inevitably reaching a second consecutive 76.28 mile/122.76 km jaunt around the sidewalk made in some dystopian movie about sleepless athletes in search of something with cracks in it. However, this sidewalk is famous and revered, for the world’s longest race requires the strongest athletes with the biggest hearts, to transform themselves into running machines, with purpose and aplomb. They are changed after reaching their goal of goals, never allowing fear to command their lives. Sri Chinmoy’s brilliant race is revealing ways for aspiring seeker-athletes to tear away their egos, and reveal their true selves, not just an imagined potential. Hail the 3100 runners y’all.
