Day 4: The Dodging of the Rains

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
8 September

Although rain was forecasted, the weather stayed okay, with the high hitting 80ºF, but the humidity cranked up a little. Still the runners kept an honest effort, even though acclimation is still happening in the race of 5,649 laps. Andrea Marcato continued his assault, but pulled back a little when the motors screamed for rest. He finished Day leader for three straight days, reaching 67.5 miles(108.6km).

Vasu maintained second overall, with a steady 64.7 miles (104.2km). Wei Ming Lo from Taiwan(ROC) moved along nicely in his custom-made sandals, reaching 63.1 miles(101.5km).

Harita Davies, the only distaff runner this year, reached 60.3 miles (97.1km), finishing strongly as expected rain stayed away from the race-course. It is still early in the race, and getting used to this concrete surface is not an easy task. The ultra runners know all the possibilities, but strive on discovering new potential when one would least expect it. We shall see how well this group adapts to the high mileage. Early observations show high potential for ‘maybe finishing’.

Stay tuned

Day 3: Steady As She Goes

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
7 September

The weather was near perfect again today, the temps stayed moderate, the runners felt a little better and more engaged, since this chosen sport of multi-day running and racing requires deep commitment and a strong will to surmount the toughest of obstacles. Andrea Marcato, the Italian athlete with impressive performances, is beginning to click. He reached 75.1856 (120.99km) miles today, again running the last two laps in 9:00 minutes like the previous two nights. He does not look worse for wear when the night is over. He is the new wave of runners who challenge the difficult events with confidence, and sheer energy, as well as remarkable powers of recovery. He is not wearing carbon-plated, controversial shoes, he is just unveiling his abilities, lap after lap, often without someone to hand him food or a few drinks of fruit juice as he wizzes past. Meanwhile, Vasu Duzhiy, in second position, had to settle for 68.05 miles (109.51km), and dropped back about 6 miles more to the Italian leader Andrea. Wei Ming Lo ran 62.56 miles (100.68km) to keep in the mix for a solid finish. Harita Davies remained in fourth overall, but worked hard to get the 109 laps needed to maintain her cushion of laps. Overall, five runners made it past 60 miles. Takasumi Senoo from Japan showed more snap in his step, running well throughout the day.

Day 2: Shuffling the Deck a Little

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
6 September

Day 2

The action was moving at the top of the totem pole, as day 1 leader Vasu Duzhiy, the three-time winner of the race, set out to maintain his momentum. By his first break, a runner moved along side him in the quest for laps. The able Italian Andrea Marcato moved along in a quick pace, with nary a stop, and along in his personal war with high mileage and fleeting time as his companions. Halfway through the day -long session, both men had topped 40 miles at 8 hours 40 minutes. Meanwhile, Wei-Ming Lo, the Taiwan legend, continued about the course, albeit a little stomach music being off-key, but finding green tea to his liking. He stayed within 10 miles of the leaders, and admired their athletic prowess. By days’ end, five had gone over 60+ miles for the 18 hours on course. The top two dueled to the end, but Mr Marcato’s leg-speed and youthful vigor was too much for the stoic Lion of St Petersburg to reach.

Andrea reached 80.67 miles(129.83 km) and garnered the Day 2 honor. He is averaging 81.2 miles a day. Vasu is averaging 80.4, and wore a smile on his face as he took the ride home. Wei-Ming reached 66.9 miles (107.75km) which allowed him to dream further of the days and efforts ahead. 73.5 miles per day is a good start. Harita Davies moved into fourth place with a solid 65.85 miles (105.98km).                                                         So far, so good. Good luck runners, and sleep well. The prelude to the opera has just begun, and the individual parts are moving along in formation. Keep on the effort.

Day 32

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
6 September

An overcast but non-threatening weather summary for the runners of the Infinite road was squashed by slight breezes, which pushed any showers out of the picture. Andrea Marcato is transending his race into faster and more powerful runs. He ran 76.28 miles/122.76 km enroute to his third-best day of the entire 32 so far. In distant second-place rocks the light sandals of Wei-Ming Lo to his own drumbeat, a quick, almost jovial arm suggests he is in the moment, regardless of the time.

Vasu Duzhiy is pulling out all the stops to remain on the podium. He has had his share of difficult injuries this race, but right now he seems to be firing on all cylinders. He will hit 2000 miles mid-morning.

Day 1: Seven or Eleven, It is Good to Be Back

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
5 September

5 September

Seven runners started at 6:00am EDT from the start-line on a sidewalk course known as the Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race, a 0.5488 of a mile loop that would be duplicated 5649 times in the span of seven and a half weeks, if you were lucky to finish. The race had missed its usual venue in the Queens, New York suburbs in 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic which hit the Big Apple extremely hard.

Miraculously, the SCMT from Salzburg, Austria ventured into the multi-day running world and sponsored the 3100 Mile race in a beautiful park setting with a small field to keep the streak going.

Neighbors and passers-by expressed their joy and positive vibes as the race returned to its customary position, a fixture for 24 years previously.

Taiwan icon Wei-Ming Lo led the charge for nearly 10 hours before the effort of a few younger runners brought them close to equaling Mr Lo.

Ultimately, Vasu Duzhiy from St.Petersburg, Russia prevailed with 83.9664 miles (138.1308km) for the day. Andrea Marcato, the erstwhile runner from Italy who won the Salzburg race last fall in sparkling effort in 43 days, 12 hours, throttled up late in Day 1 to notch 81.77 miles (131.59 km). Wei Ming Lo, happy with his effort, topped 80.6736 miles (129.8315km) to open his journey. Stutisheel Lebedev from Kiev, Ukraine a nine-time finisher, capped off a solid day with 71.344 miles (114.817km), and held fourth place. Harita Davies, the only woman in the race this year went for an opening PB of 70.2464 miles(113.0506 km).

18 Hours Before the Journey Begins

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
4 September

4 September

Eighteen hours to go, at 12:00 noon, NYC time, before the start of the 25th Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race. 6:00am will be the daily start time on Sunday, Sept. 5.

For 52 days, or fewer, the lucky seven will answer the call to move forward, chasing their dreams and searching for meaning within the framework of 18 possible hours moving each and every day. The simplicity and complexity of life hit head on- the ‘whys’ and ‘hows’ of our minds are confronted with movement and action. The runners are free, yet confined. They are brave, yet fearful of all the vagaries that Mother Nature and Father Time might have lined up for the heroes to conquer. And conquer they must…..one step at a time.

Please follow the webcams throughout the race, it might just plant a seed, or start a dream within.

Race Director's updates

Less Than Five Days Before The 3100 Begins Anew

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
31 August

This coming Sunday, a small group of super-long distance athletes will toe the line at 6:00am EDT New York,

for the 25th Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race. Six men and one woman will embark on the 52-day journey

with joy, and the feeling of relief from both the mind-crunching world pandemic and the need to stay away from everyone else.

Let's hope the late summer / fall seasons offer cool evenings and clear days. May the runners pursue their dreams with conviction,

balance, and granduer. May humanity wink at the runners child-like spirit, and gain the enthusiasm to pursue their own dreams-

step by step.
