Day 26

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
10 October

Andrea Marcato reached his third best total of laps today- 141- which is a ‘full sheet’ of 77.3808 miles/ 124.5323 km, in the vernacular of 3100 Mile runners. Laps are the real separation from imaginary to real. Each lap is precious to them, as it should be. Like baby steps, the runner makes progress, while recounting his or her steps from previous days. Mr Marcato is making larger increments in his totals, and the streak continues at 23 straight days over 70 miles.

The top six runners all moved past 60 miles. It rained off and on for two hours, but then cooled down the last three hours of the day. Ananda-Lahari Zuscin went past the 2000 Mile mark for the 17th time in his 3100 Mile Race career journey. At midnight began the 24-hour observation of Sri Chinmoy’s passing into Mahasamadhi. The runners will offer their gratitude for being in this remarkable event.

Cheers to ultrarunners everywhere, and feel Peace within and without you.

Day 35: Five Weeks In

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
9 October

Andrea Marcato continues his efforts to find new ways to reach his goals. He is moving with purpose and conviction, and his 70-Mile streak has reached 22 straight days. This evening he topped the 4000km mark nearly eight hours faster than his Salzburg, Austria mark. He reached 2500.33 miles /118.349 km for 35 days- another personal best. His final target is moving into the high rent district of the 3100 Mile Race- legendary performances that the best in the world have offered to us lucky observers. If he maintains his efforts and avoids injury, a new ranking place awaits his finish. Watch for this man to impress you with his power strides and intense focus.

Wei Ming Lo surprised everyone, when, today, before noon, he switched from his famous plastic sandals to a legitimate pair of running shoes.  The almighty sidewalk course would not allow runners to fly by with sandals for the whole event- at least not this time. Still remarkable- nearly 2200 miles running in sandals, with nary a blister or a sore muscle.

Stutisheel Lebedev went past the 2000-mile mark for the 12th time in his remarkable sporting career.

Day 34

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
8 October

The morning weather became warm and sunny, with the temps up to 77ºF and the humidity rising. The afternoon turned a little cloudy, and the air shifted, bringing some relief from the post-summer warmth.  However, the heat could not delay the runners flowing running skills. Six of the seven reached 60- plus miles, with the Race leader Andrea Marcato flipping another 75.185 miles/120.99 km onto his scorecard. Mr Marcato has passed his best times in the super long schedule of the race, including 2400 miles and Day 34 totals. Japanese hero-warrior Takasumi Senoo reached 2000 miles in a faster time than his Athens warm-up race in 2020, just before the pandemic stopped New York City in its tracks. We are grateful to all concerned for the impetus to create new 3100 Mile memories on the same course as always. Carpe Diem!! Oh runners of the 3100 Mile Race.

Day 33

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
7 October

Twenty straight days at the top of the 70+ Club, our leader Andrea Marcato is matching and beating himself from a year ago, when, on a beautiful park setting-course, became the fifth fastest human in the world to run a 3,100 Mile Race. Salzburg, Austria was the setting, mountains and running water, wide open fields, and a vehicle–prohibited course lent the Italian athlete a pathway to greatness. Today, he waxed poetic with his feet and heart, not only maintaining a 70-mile streak, but inevitably reaching a second consecutive 76.28 mile/122.76 km jaunt around the sidewalk made in some dystopian movie about sleepless athletes in search of something with cracks in it. However, this sidewalk is famous and revered, for the world’s longest race requires the strongest athletes with the biggest hearts, to transform themselves into running machines, with purpose and aplomb. They are changed after reaching their goal of goals, never allowing fear to command their lives. Sri Chinmoy’s brilliant race is revealing ways for aspiring seeker-athletes to tear away their egos, and reveal their true selves, not just an imagined potential. Hail the 3100 runners y’all.

Day 32

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
6 October

An overcast but non-threatening weather summary for the runners of the Infinite road was squashed by slight breezes, which pushed any showers out of the picture. Andrea Marcato is transending his race into faster and more powerful runs. He ran 76.28 miles/122.76 km enroute to his third-best day of the entire 32 so far. In distant second-place rocks the light sandals of Wei-Ming Lo to his own drumbeat, a quick, almost jovial arm suggests he is in the moment, regardless of the time.

Vasu Duzhiy is pulling out all the stops to remain on the podium. He has had his share of difficult injuries this race, but right now he seems to be firing on all cylinders. He will hit 2000 miles mid-morning.

About the author:

Rupantar has been the race director of the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team since 1985, having been asked by Sri Chinmoy to serve in that capacity. As well as working on the big races the US Marathon Team organise each year - the 3100 Mile Race and the Six and 10 Day Race - he also spends a considerable amount of time archiving the Marathon Team's 40 year history on this website.

To Utpal:

I didn't know the true meaning of this race until 2019 when I fortunately visited the site.

Not only is Andrea aggressive with his start but also at water stops.  I have yet to see him stop to grab a cup.  I liked his answer.

I often wonder how my father would approach this race.  I'm certain it would be similar to Wei Ming getting off the course significantly earlier than the others.  Here's a chart of my father's 3 consecutive day labor day weekend runs twice around Manhattan Island.

His best time as of 1969 was 8:59:14.

I could see my father, if doing this race before 1973, running for 10-12 hours and walking 2 hours as recovery.  I believe he could do this for many days (52 - I'm not sure) absent a major injury.  In reviewing his training diaries he was injured more often than I ever knew.  He had the ability to self heal himself.

I could also see him renting an apartment near the course and doing course measurement and other paperwork like he always did after dinner.  His 20 mile morning run to work also started at 6a.

Your daily videos are outstanding.

Thank You!

Gary

Day 31

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
5 October

With three full weeks to go, the runners are moving well, but the overall wear and tear on their bodies is more and more apparent. However, the stays in medical are short and to the point. There is no time to waste. You have to give it your all. The daylight is getting shorter. There is no time to waste.

Andrea Marcato continues his onslaut with 18 straight days at 70 miles or over 113 km. Wei-Ming is just 5 miles away from 2000 miles, a new milestone in his resume. Vasu Duzhiy went past the 3000 km mark for the 9th time in his super-long career. Harita Davies followed suit seven hours later, reaching 3000km for the third time.Takasumi Senoo, the Japanese runner in the 3100 for the first time, is in the good figures by less than half a lap.

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
4 October

Wei-Ming Lo, the Taiwanese runner competing in sandals, reached another personal milestone, passing 3000km for the first time in 29:01:18:12. A pioneer in ultra running in his home country, Mr Lo has made his race look newsworthy, if not easy, by his measured, but functional running style. He is always posing for local or Taiwanese folks stopping by for selfies or other group photos.

Andrea Marcato clicked the counter for the 17th time straight at over 70 miles/ 113 km.

Six of seven runners moved past 60 miles today. Early evening showers subsided before 9:00pm/ 21:00 hours.

Day 29

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
3 October

The streak is now 16 straight days of 70+ miles (113+km), and Andrea Marcato is living a dream and a reality all at once. His lead over second place is a tick short of 200 miles. He is feeling strong and understands the course and his position on it. He has several new pairs of shoes coming, and enough inspiration to get to Day 44, which appears to be his finishing day.

The other six runners are feeling the joys and sorrows of each new day, each lap giving them confirmation of their place in this race, and their place in the Cosmic Reality that is everyone’s lives on this Earth. Deep you say!- yes it is deep, because they have challenged themselves once again to seek new horizons, and new methods of understanding the Unknown, and the Unknowable. Yet, the mind is not the answer in this play, the heart is the answer, the real answer. The mind is along for the ride.

Four went over sixty miles today.

2 October

Five of seven runners made it past the regulation of 109 laps- 59.819 miles/ 96.269 km- today, the first four weeks completed by the hearty souls all. The top five are on pace to finish, and the gap between first and second is widening, with the terrific performance by Andrea Marcato . Even though Wei-Ming Lo, the Titan of Taiwan, goes home earlier for extra rest, Mr Marcato stays to the last minute to ensure a full effort. He now sports a 15-day streak of mileage above 70+ miles/ 113+km. Andrea will reach 2000 miles on Sunday morning between 8:15 and 9:00 am, depending on speed and breaks. Give him a shout out if you have a chance, he would love to see or hear from you, wherever you are. See the cams on our website 3100.srichinmoyraces.org for updates and live visuals.

Day 52: The Last Runner

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
1 October

The Magnificent Seven have had their dreams fulfilled in the longest race, or not. Today, the remarkable athlete from Japan- Takasumi Senoo- became the first runner from the Land of the Rising Sun to challenge and cross the finish line within the time limit. Takasumi finished in 51:12:50:52. Mr Senoo was very thankful of all the help offered, and of course, praised his wife for her steadfast help and knowledge within. Mr Senoo and the other remaining runners endured a lot, but grabbed the brass ring, just as a bonafide N’oreaster rocked the New York area all day, with heavy rains and wind. The 25th Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race reached its conclusion, but the stories and friendships have created a lifetime of memories.

See you next year folks, when the race around the block moves forward again, one day at a time, one lap at a time.

Day 27

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
1 October

Day Leader Andrea Marcato from Italy is impressing many people around the globe with his relentless approach to the race. He not only has run 14 straight days of a minimum of 70+ miles, but has also surpassed some of his distance marks set in 2020 at Salzburg. This morning he reached the 3000km barrier for the second time in 26:04:56:38. Andrea remains sixth fastest all-time for that distance, having run faster than in Salzburg by 4 hours 54 minutes. The top five runners are still on pace to finish within the 52- day limit, barring any catastrophe or severe weather or storm.

Day 26

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
30 September

The cooler, clear sky and north westerlies laid the foundation for runners to get to more approving results. Alas, the rush for more laps increased as the halfway signs came into play, and three more reached halfway, under regulation. Andrea Marcato listed 13 straight days at 70+ miles and over. Wei-Ming Lo went home at 8:15:pm after reaching 64.2 miles, content as a chesire cat who knows some simple secret. Vasu Duzhiy rebounded from a worrisome day to 66.4 miles. Tamasumi Senoo made it before the day’s end with 1550 miles.  And finally, signaling to those following the Race that he was still in the fray, Ananda-Lahari Zuscin from Slovakia ran 78.47 miles (126.29km) before the day ended.

Vasu Duzhiy- halfway- 1550 miles/2494.483km- 25:02:29:30

Day 25

Only three made it past 60 miles today- the Fearless Andrea Marcato, the Irrepressible Wei-Ming Lo, and the surging Stutisheel Lebedev. For the Italian Mr Marcato, this was a 12-day 70-mile streak of domination. He is two and a half days ahead of second place, and Mr Lo is locked into his journey. He is not competing with anyone else, only with his fears of the unknown, which are microscopic right now. Wei-Ming is also smiling more, and receiving a lot of joy. The third runner of note- Stutisheel Lebedev- has had his share of tough days since September 5, however he remains confident that he will finish this year.

The other four runners are giving all their energy to their running challenge. We will see who will be the smartest, the most self-giving, and the wisest of the bunch.

Wei-Ming Lo- Taiwan (ROC) Halfway (1550 miles/ 2494.483km)- 24:02:32:00 This is the farthest he has ever run.

Day 24

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
28 September

Four six-day races later, the band of seven continue their onslaught in search of laps, a currency unlike any other conceived or imagined. Sri Chinmoy, the founder and primal force behind the Marathon Team worldwide, saw the promise and eventual acceptance of running on loop courses as a viable alternative to the many trail ultra-marathons that inhabit the sports world. 135 multi-day races later, and somehow the SCMT has weathered the onslaught of 36 years of long races, and revealed the mantra of our  3100 Mile flagship race- “Self-Transcendence”, to go beyond one’s previous achievements. As he so succinctly writes: ”The pride of the earthly race and the joy of the heavenly race have the same goal: Self-Transendence”.

Andrea Marcato once again went beyond his previous achievements by running to 1700 miles in 24:03:36:31, nearly nine hours faster than his split at Salzburg, Austria.

Wei Ming Lo ran several laps today, many in the rain, at about 5:00 minutes or even faster, while topping off his day by going home just past 8:30pm. He might need beauty sleep, but the 57-year-old sandal runner is doing very well in his first 3100. He is by far the quickest man on the track.  More later!

Day 23

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
27 September

Andrea continues to move along at a remarkable pace, the cooler nights allowing faster paces in the evenings. His last few laps each evening resemble an interval workout on the track, which many an athlete knows is macho death-traps, with intervals between the repeats becoming increasingly smaller, the pain of anaerobic running leads to lactic acid buildup stopping or forcing one to slow down. Only, Andrea instead is fighting that time clock as it heads to midnight, though he knows a lap saved is a lap earned. Ten straight 70’s ring nicely in his multiday lexicon so far.

Second placer Wai-Ming Lo has run 23 straight days over 62.56 miles (100.68km), so, although it seems overwhelming, the sandals wearer is the world-wide envy of every sandal wearer on earth.

Harita Davies and Vasu Duzhiy are deadlocked in third place, as an Achilles tendon has had some swelling and pain for the New Zealand running Queen. She still runs along, but without the snap in her gait that terrorized everyone watching. Like Vasu has done, she will weather the storm and emerge again as the tendon heals up.

Hang in there, runners. You are all amazing, even if you don’t know that.

Andrea Marcato dominated the headlines today in the 3100, as he ran 70+ miles/113km for the ninth straight day. In doing so, he surpassed his half-way (1550.miles/ 113+km) mark from 2020 by nearly eight hours, and he is over two days ahead of second place Wei-Ming Lo.  Stutisheel Lebedev reached 118 laps (64.75 miles(104.2185 km), and offered his efforts today to the success of his father, who yesterday in Berlin, at age 80+, ran a 4:19 marathon- in warm weather.!!

The cool air and perfect weather on Sunday were a Godsend. Good Luck, runners, and keep moving.
