Day 16:

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
28 September

Rainy and cold. Luckily the rain had breaks and for a long time it was just drizzling.

Andrea covered 115,8 km to  again win the day. With yesterdays’ 1000 mile achievement he is the official Italian record holder for 1000 miles.

Today Thomas one of our local team members served him food and drinks. At one point he was waiting for Andrea a few meters before the camp. Andrea literally never stops for food or drinks, he just grabs it while walking by fast, so Thomas wanted to jog with him a few meters. Thomas oversaw how slippery the rainy street and the muddy grass on the side was. He fell and sat in the mud with his white trouser. This made Andrea laugh so hard that he could not drink any more and for many meters people could hear him laughing.

Ushika was again very determined and steady. In the morning he asked Cäcilia one of our 81-year old team members, if she could bring some cake.

Cäcilia is still walking every morning for two hours. Inspired by our 5 runners she jogged even a little bit the other day.

Soon after Ushika was ased her for some cake, she brought 3 wonderful and colourful cakes. Ushika enjoyed the sweets for the main part of the afternoon and as evening the cakes and closed the day with 99,1 km.

On an emotional level it seemed it was a typical Austrian Monday, for some of the runners, which means one gets more easily angry and finds faults with others.

Definitely not Milan, though. He is still surprising with his equanimity and his detached cheerful spirit.

He even said he was grateful for his shin splint because through this he gained a beautiful spiritual experience.

He walked and jogged bravely accepting the injury and not having too much pain. He made it up to 87,6 km.

He still has two friends from home here at the race who are helping him.

Ananda-Lahari had a nice day walking only, but a difficult night. At the end he went home shortly before midnight covering 81,4 km.

Nirbhasa celebrated his 1000 mile milestone today in the afternoon.

And went home at 23:39 finishing with 96 km after having a little bit of a hard day.

Sleep well runners !

Stats

Andrea Marcato- 1700km- 15days+17:03:01

Nirbhasa Magee- 1000 miles- 15days+10:51:40

Ushika Muckenhumer- 1500km- 15days+13:01:37

Ananda-Lahari Zuscin- 1500km- 15days+13:45:00

It appears that all five runners are in a good routine, and are past the point of their minds shutting everything down and giving up. Usually about or near three weeks into this difficult event, a runner has the determination and well-being in the body to continue the journey. And with 36 days to go, there is still much to learn about themselves and their world of constant motion. Good luck runners, and continue to strive. It helps us all, and gives us pause for reflection. Your transcendence is our inspiration.

Day 15: Sunday in the Park: Ultra Edition

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
27 September

Very nice sunny Sunday.

Many people in the park. We still had many visiting friends, jogging, playing music and helping at the Race.

Andrea was still inspired by his friends from Italy. Nivedak brought him supplements which might have helped him to go fast during the day.

At night he got tired and had a couple of 10 min breaks. In total he had four 10 minute breaks and covered 118,9 km, which made him winner of Day 15.

He reached for the first time in his career 1000 miles. All Joy!

Sri Chinmoy had in the 90's a 'September multi-day event" which he called the Sri Chinmoy 700/ 1000/1300 Mile Ultra-Trio.

In this Race for the 1000 Miler men had 15 days time to complete it ( woman 16 days ). Well done Andrea you made it!

Nirbhasa had a tired day. For some reason he felt exhausted. Maybe he is still adjusting to the Race. He went home at 22:50 reaching 99,1 km.

Ananda-Lahari had, after two days of walking, one of his flying days. He looked happy and energetic, which shows in the mileage. He is inspired to consume more sugar. He seems to live on sugar on his fast days. Today he covered 117,9 km and went home at 23:50. This huge mileage brought him second place on day 15.

Milan had a nice day enjoying the company of quite a few Czech friends. His shin splint is swollen but he has not much pain. Still he took it easy and walked more, covering 89,7 km and beaming with light.

Ushika had another great 'Jay Guru' day and covered 101,2 km.- his best day after day 1. He looked happy and loves ice cream. Almost as much as running lone distances!

Stats

  • Andrea Marcato- 1000miles- 14 days+05:20:20-National record - Bravissimo Senor! (old record-14:07:23:08-Lucio Bazzana-in Athens, 2010)
  • Nirbhasa Magee- 1500km-14+08:07:21         hey, Nirbhasa, please eat more, as if your life depended on it,..... because it does!

Ananda-Lahari climbed back up to within three miles of even par for the Race. Ushika is three miles behind of the Slovakian runner, so the two gents seem to be helping each other out with a faint ’cat and mouse game’, or the short story of the two gentlemen entering a room at the same time-‘Oh, you go first’ Oh no, you go first’, and so on.

But in reality, they are both real gentlemen. Good luck runners, 37 days of more fun to go! Keep going Milan- soon you too, will reach 1000 miles.

Day 14: Two Weeks on the Run

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
26 September

Report day 14,

Less rain, less cold, especially in the evening.  It was basically rain free at night and not so cold as yesterday.

Andrea had many visitors from Italy cheering him and talking enthusiastically in Italian to him.

His slightly swollen ankle is kind of under control and does not bother him as his mileage shows.

He is the king of acceleration, he runs for a few meters and walks for a few meters than he accelerates and runs again.

These intervals can be really short and the running quite fast. With this strategy he plays a lot. He tries hard to reach 70 miles every day. So he won Day honors once more.

Milan took his todays shin splint experience in a wonderful manner. Being happy and cheerful, trying to stay in his heart he walked the whole day and covered 77,2 km.

There are still five and a half weeks to make more progress.

Ananda-Lahari was again 'contemplating' on the Supreme and covering very happily 81,4 km.

He took very good care of his feet (no blisters....) and is looking forward to a sunny Sunday. Hopefully, he can run again- soon.

Nirbhasa covered in his unstoppable manner 104,3 km and went home at 23:39, being the first runner going to sleep. His steadiness and consistency is inspiring.

Ushika had another good day with 99,1 km. While moving, along side was our local Salzburger Nachrichten newspaper reporter was interviewing him. The photographer said he has no time, yet then he stayed 2 or 3 hours.

Day 13: The Rains Came

By Sahishnu Szczesiul
25 September

Day 13,

Rain from morning to evening. Night temperature 4 Celsius.

Very difficult weather. Still all the runners were quite cheerful and kept on going the whole 18 hours.

The runners needed more waterproof running gear, socks, shoes, trousers, jackets, gloves, hats, shawls etc....They had to change into dry gear quite often. Quite different from a week ago at 29ºC !

Ushika said he never had a day in a multiday race with so few minutes without rain.

He called the day "triple-miracle-day". I guess for him it was a miracle to reach 97 km at midnight.

In his typical manner he finished his last and 93rd lap today saying "Jai Guru!"-Victory!

It seems nothing bothers Andrea. He accepts circumstances well and strives hard to overcome problems.

He closed at midnight with 104,3 km which makes him once again winner of the day.

Changing his wet clothes for dry ones, at midnight, he discovered that his ankle is swollen.

Let the well-deserved night rest heal his swelling.

Nirbhasa did well and went home at 23:27 covering 98 km. This total brought him 2nd place for the day.

Milan likes the cold weather, but took no break until 21:00, which resulted in shin splints. And therefore he could only walk from then on. He went home 23:30 with 86,6 km.

Ananda-Lahari had another off day with a lot of walking. He hopes he can run again tomorrow. He covered 84,5 km by midnight.

Priyavadin

Splits

Andrea Marcato- 900 miles- 12 days+16:19:54

Nirbhasa Magee- 1300km- 12 days+08:49:48

The rainy days are the tough ones, especially when it is cold rain. It is impossible to stay dry- especially the feet, so having numerous pairs of shoes is essential. The colder weather phenomenon of  late fall also places more pressure on the body, as heavier foods are needed to sustain energy in colder conditions, and the body’s immune system is taxed more- not by over heating, but from chills causing weakness and head colds. I think all of us who follow ultra-distance races have some empathy for those runners who go do the extreme events, because we have an inkling how the mind can weaken one’s enthusiasm in a flash.

Good luck runners, and stay healthy. Do what you can, and move along. We will be watching. Smile when you can- it will relieve tension in the face and head.

Day 12

Today was a perfect day- all  five runners went above the needed average.

The weather was a little cool in the morning, sunny and hot at midday and the afternoon,  but cool at night.

Many thanks to the city council and the park commission!

Priyavadini called them this morning and asked if they could kindly clean the course for the runners.

Clean out the stones, leaves, grass etc... from the road.

They said they will make it. The very nice thing was that they cleaned it right away, in the next two hours it was done.

Ananda-Lahari and Ushika were in the seventh heaven of delight. Ushika said it was a divinization of the course.

Ananda-Lahari showed us once more how he can fly. After having a day of walking yesterday he covered today 117,9 km to win the day. Bravo !

Andrea was not much slower and closed at midnight (10 min after Ananda-Lahari) with 115,8 km.

Bellissimo !

Nirbhasa in usual manner closed at 23:34  with 108,5 km. Perfetto !

Ushika ran until midnight, and although he sometimes had to go quite slow, he covered 100 km for the first time since Day 1. Incredible !

Milan seems to have a full resurrection and, although he again had to face extreme fatigue, he brought it up to 97 km. Way to go !

Splits

Milan Javornicky- 1000km-11days+02:02:54-his first 1000km, and- 1086.46km/ 674.72 miles- his most ever run in a multi day event

Ushika -94.452km/ 58.68miles per day- he is 18km behind pace but narrowing the gap

Ananda-Lahari Zuscin- with his two days in the last four at 75.6 and 73. Miles, he has reached even par for the race. No surprise. Ananda-Lahari is a special runner, and all-time great.

Nirbhasa is averaging 104.02 km / 64.63 miles per day. He is slightly ahead of his best 3100 mile performance from 2019. Great effort so far.

Andrea Marcato has run over 70 miles in eight of the 12 days of the Race. He is averaging 112.716 km / 70.04 miles per day. In the 23 -year history of the 3100 Mile Race, only five men have been able to average 70 miles/112.7 kms per day for the duration. Watching him on the webcam, his running is smooth and efficient. Wonderful to see a new face starting to approach his potential in a super-long multi-day.

Day 11

Luckily the announced rain started later than expected, at around 10:30 and ended also quicker as announced, after approximately 2,5 hours.

After having been treated by our physical therapist, Bernd from Germany, at 20:30 Andrea had a fantastic 'sprint' until midnight and closed with 114,8 km ( 71,3 miles) which made him the winner of the day. Andrea likes the cooler weather. Little rain is no problem for him. The rain has to be strong that he uses a coat, otherwise he just runs in his shirts.

The runners used umbrellas to protect their shoes and their clothes from the rain as the rain got stronger. Fortunately it was only about an hour of strong rain. Luckily the whole day was still warm..

Nirbhasa happily moved on to cover again solid 109,5 km and could go home at 23:35. It seems his brother Sadanand is of great help to him.

Ushika remained steady the whole day and was impressed by Bernd’s treatment. He reached 99,1 km at midnight.

Milan although being extremely tired from the very morning on covered for the first time since 9 days the needed 96 km. Bravo Milan! You are back into the race.

Milan also got a very painful but at the same time extremely healing muscle and foot treatment from Bernd.

Thank you very much Bernd. Please come more often!

Ananda-Lahari might describe the day : " It is between the Supreme and me", nobody and nothing can help me. He basically walked the whole day in his common silent and soft manner and reached 77,2 km at midnight. Hopefully we can see him fly soon, of course only if the Supreme allows....

More splits to share

Ananda-Lahari Zuscin-   1000km- 10+09:57:16- his 18th time through the 1000km split in his multiday career

Ushika Muckenhumer-    1000km- 10+11:52:03

Our Day Leader and Race overall dynamo Andrea Marcato has reached over 70 miles in seven of his first 11 days- quite an impressive start to the relatively young Italian. If he can keep his body free from injury, particularly his legs below the knees right down to his soles of the feet, then he has a chance at a great first time achievement.

Nirbhasa has been very consistent and is moving along very nicely. The webcam has been revealing- seeing runners in various stages of the day, actually shows their overall strength and demeanor.

Ushika caught up to Ananda-Lahari by the end of the day, although I think the 75-mile day 48 hours ago By Mr Zuscin has left some fatigue in the Slovakian legend. Surely he will be back to attack mode, once he gets the inner message.

It is good to see Milan get fit and ready to try to reduce the km/miles deficit he is in. He should reach 1000kms for the first time tomorrow early.

Stay the Course, Runners, and Easy as she goes!!!

Day 10

Another beautiful sunny day in Salzburg. All runners had the Grace to do good mileage, even Milan seemed to get used to the hard work and covered 92,8 km. Only 3,2 km missing for an average day to finish the 3100. His knee is healed to 85%, according to him. Hopefully Milan can improve his performance by a little and start diminishing his deficit to be on pace. Still 42 days are left in the Race.

Somehow, the dauntless Ushika reached 98,1 km struggling very hard, especially in the afternoon. In the evening there were light complaints coming from his side, so that his pain reached a new level. Still he is grateful for the experience.

Andrea reached nearly 700 miles in 10 days. 696 miles was his total at midnight, covering 109,5 km on day 10. A few hours before midnight in one of his few breaks he mentioned: "I am quite cooked". He is still struggling with sore fore feet. Also after finishing the day he saw that his left Achilles is a bit swollen.

Nirbhasa was the man of day 10, covering 112,7 km and going home at 23:40. He was the only one going home before midnight. Steady, cheerful and with new energy from his new helper (his brother Sadanand), Nirbhasa mastered the day as Day Leader.

Ananda-Lahiri finished at midnight with 99,1 km. in his usual silent and humble manner.

Many more striking days to come.

Ten days have come and gone, and our five stalwart runners are still moving well and making inner and outer progress. Though the journey is long, each day is an opportunity for the long distance runner to find his best ‘Self’ inside the mortal frame. I know I admire these people for attempting such a difficult task, and I think they understand a little more each day why they are running. Those are the best stories to hear and tell.

10 days

  • Andrea Marcato-        1121.9449km / 697.1443 miles - personal best

Day 9

The weather was again nice and warm. Just a little rain from 22:15 to 23:00. In the beginning of the day all runners seemed strong and cheerful.

Ushika got very tired before the rain, but did finish the day at midnight with solid 94,9 km.

Ananda-Lahari had one of his "great days" reaching 121 km at 22:38 and going home as the first runner for his well deserved rest, after winning day nine.

Andrea reached 1000 km in 8 Days +16:03:20 and closed the day at midnight with another 114,8 km, fantastico!

Milan found his knee to be up to 80 per cent this morning and ran full of excitement; much too fast and long only to get a minor shin splint above his left ankle.  Luckily he discovered it early and did treat it right away so that he still closed the day with respectable 88,7 km. Bravo Milan!

Nirbhasa is running a very determined and steady race so far reaching again 102,3 km at 23:37. He left the track and was sitting in the car, as fast as possible.

Priyavadin

  • Andrea Marcato- 1000km- 8days+16:03:20- PB by 23 hours
  • Ananda-Lahari Zuscin- 500 miles- 8days+09:36:54
  • Ushika Muckenhumer 500 miles- 8days+12:02:39

Runners fitness is arriving as expected. Andrea Marcato set a new personal best for 1000km on his way to another 71+ mile day. Of the nine days completed, he has topped 70+ miles six times.

Ananda-Lahari Zuscin was not only the Day Leader today, his total was the best single day of the Race so far- 121 km / 75+ miles.

Ushika Muckenhumer has gotten stronger, and veteran Nirbhasa Magee is getting to a good level as well. The top four runners should help inspire the newest runner Milan to move along. One thing is for sure - in this race, you cannot allow yourself to get too high, or too low. Consistency will be the forebearer of a fine performance. Plus, there is less discomfort if you can find that perfect pace, and a little extra push to do one more lap. Good luck runners

Day 8

We had a beautiful warm Sunday. Family and kids coming to the park enjoying table tennis, football (soccer) and other games.

The night was cold. All 5 runners are still with exuding excellent spirit! And it seems they are slowly getting used to the work ahead.

Andrea had another wonderful day with 114,8 km finishing the 8th day with a total of 556 miles, only 4 miles away from averaging 70 miles a day for 8 days. Which is just fantastic!

Nobody should think that was easy for Andrea. He is still battling with sore foot problems (heat and soreness). He is very disciplined in keeping his breaks short and also having very few breaks. His attitude is that 'he came here to perform'!

Nirbhasa was again super steady and reached 102 km, went home first at 23:39.

All other runners ran until midnight.

Always at night he has a little problem with getting tired...... During the day he battled with a few problems, but they could not stop him.

One wise thing he discovered was that the sharp corners on the course he has to walk to avoid problems.

Ushika had a really good day reaching for the first time after day 2 the needed mileage to finish the race 98,1 km (he needed 96 km). He was so grateful that he ended the day by telling me that he would like to order flowers for Sri Chinmoy's statue in our Cafe-Restaurant 'The Heart of Joy'.

Ananda-Lahari is still trying to find his rhythm. But told me today that he is determined to finish the race in 52 days. He looks very fresh and I think and hope we will see bigger numbers from him in the upcoming days.

Milan is battling with pain in his right knee and the same sore foot problems as Andrea. Ultimately he reached 85,6 km. Ananda-Lahari had a similar problem with the sore foot. Milan is positive and sweet like a child, for almost every day.

Priyavadin

500 miles splits:

Andrea Marcato-  500mi- 7+03:28:05

Nirbhasa Magee- 500mi- 7+15:50:49

Andrea is showing signs of great general fitness. As long as he avoids big problems with his feet, and takes care of his overall strength. His recovery from day to day seems quite good. He has a chance to do really well in this race in Salzburg. Many people know that he would have run the 3100 Mile race in New York, if not for the Covid-19 pandemic. Nirbhasa also seems to be rounding into shape. He has three finishes to his credit, so the distance is not as intimidating as it might be to a first-timer. Priyavadin is also correct in the progress of Ushika and Ananda-Lahari. If both men are able to gain strength and optimal fitness, they could finish within 52 days. Ushika has one finish in two attempts, and of course-Annada-Lahari has the most starts- 17- and six finishes in his resume. As any runner in this race knows, ultimately, it is up to the Highest Power, whether or not he or she finishes. 44 days left.

Good luck to all. More later

Day 7, - The day started for me with a very unusual twist, journalist and pilot Gerald took me at 7:20 am on a two-seater plane to our Race site and gave me afterwards a one hour round flight to our mountains (Steinernes Meer), which was extremely beautiful and uplifting. The weather was just perfect. With this gesture, he showed his inspiration about Sri Chinmoy and the Race.  He shared his enthusiasm about these experiences with friends in Nepal, who were delighted, and they shared the information about the 3100 Mile Race even more in their country.   Andrea had a great day, although he struggled with sore foot problems-he managed to cover 115,6 km. What a runner! The evening was again cool after having a sunny, warm day. Andrea can run well when the sun sets- his hot feet cool down a little.   Nirbhasa journeys on, facing problems but still covered 99 km. He left for home as the earliest runner before midnight, at 23:27 pm.   Ananda-Lahari is also facing a little bit of sore feet, reaching 80,4 km. Being humble and happy is his usual self, going home with the others at midnight.   Milan is fighting with his painful right knee and sore feet covering 77 km today. He is still in a good spirit and enjoyed the company of his friends from Prague.   Ushika put up a brave fight and reached 89,8 km.    Well done runners!   We had many visitors from Vienna, Prague, Villach, Zurich, Italy, Moldavia and of course, the locals. Very joyful for the runners. Priyavadin

After one week, the daily averages-

Andrea Marcato-       111.822km / 69.483miles

Nirbhasa Magee-      101.832km / 63.275miles

Ananda-Lahari Zuscin 92.588km / 57.532miles

Ushika Muckenhumer  91.843km / 57.068miles

Milan Javornicky-         89.457km / 55.586miles

Six and a half weeks remain in the Race, so there is still lots of time for the runners to go deep within and transcend their best performances. But those experiences are buffeted by their self-offerings throughout the event. Those offerings are for the Higher energy and deeper Reality within all of us. They are on a journey of self-discovery. So experiences, good or bad, are all around their path inside. If they choose the right choice inside them, then slow or fast, injury or flying around the course- are all part of the play.

Put one foot in front of the other, Oh runners, and take another step.

Sooner or later, you will reach your Goal.

Day 6

Today was interview day: a two-man team, friends of Ushika and the Gandharva Loka (music store-he is the manager) came. They wanted to do a report on the 3100 and on Ushika. Tomorrow morning they will film him moving slowly and stiff from his flat to his bike. Another local reporter came. He, for the first time visited our Cafe and got so inspired that he came to the Race site. Here he became even more interested. The inspiration accumulated in him resulted in him inviting me tomorrow morning to fly with him in a small airplane above our course and filming the track. As an extra present, he will fly me me above our mountains later on.

Ushikas daily resume’ : Hot and Cold !

Hot during the day, cold in the evening, very cold at night.

Ushikas’ legs are slowly loosening up and recovering from 'slower than the slowest'. He started to jog again.

He reached 87 km in a good spirit and went home together with Andrea at 24:00.

Andrea after racing the day before with only 10 min break got sore feet, which inspired him to have some leaf treatment

and a longer break today. Luckily our Race director Bipin encouraged him to eat more.

He reached 102 km and went home at 24:00.

Milan seems to be a silent warrior, through working with kids in his regular life!

His legs are cooperating better and his knee problem also seems to be getting slowly better.

At 23:30 he reached 85 km and went home happily.

Nirbhasa reached 102 km at 23:20 and soulfully and cheerfully called it a day.

He feels good and is enjoying the newness of having the Race in Salzburg.

Ananda-Lahiri reached 83 km at 22:30 and asked if somebody can drive him home.

Further more he happily proclaimed 'we are making progress'! He went home at 21:00 yesterday.

As usual he is always smiling, caring about the other runners and helpers. He looks very balanced.

Ushika Muckenhumer- 500km- 5days+07:24;43

Milan Javornicky-         500km- 5days+06:54;26

Six Day Totals:

Andrea Marcato-            666.9048km / 414.3953miles

Nirbhasa Magee-           613.6776km / 381.3201miles

Ananda-Lahari Zuscin   567.7562km / 352.7874miles

Milan Javornicky-          548.9700km / 340.9278miles

The first three men are on pace to finish the race. The other two need some work, so as they progress and add to their totals,

they will overcome sore muscles and become stronger and fit. Of course, there are many obstacles in the way of all the runners.

Yet they persevere and continue on their journey. As Priyavadin has stated in his observations, the general attitude of the runners

is that they are happy to be at the course, doing their best, and pushing themselves to a greater awareness in mind and body, and beyond.

Good Luck Runners, as you reach your first week completed on Saturday.

Day 5

Day 5 started with very strong rain for approximately two hours, then  it became clear and warm. The evening got a little cooler than the previous evenings.

In the afternoon one of our Race Directors from New York arrived in Salzburg, which gave us all ( helpers and runners) a lot of joy.

As he neared the Race site he was already invited by an enthusiastic elderly lady to give an interview about the Race, which he right away obliged.

Andrea pushed right away from the morning and reached impressive 116 km (72 miles) just two minutes before midnight. He has been the Day leader every day so far. And this after having his favourite pair of shoes in the clothes dryer for the whole day, after the heavy rain in the morning. Imagine if he would have had his fast shoes.....

Nirbhasa closed the day at 23:30 with solid 99 km. He looks strong, confident and cheerful. As last year, Yahva tries to help him a little, when time allows.

Yahva is also working as a general helper for the race. Many thanks to him and Nikolaus who cover the whole day so selflessly. They fill the aid stations, receive and distribute food items, keep the place clean, and even score laps if necessary.

Ananda-Lahari was the surprise of the day. Running strong until evening he went smilingly home at 21:00 reaching 85,5 km. Saying that he could not find any rhythm anymore. Still he held third place on this day 5 with 300 miles- 484.2km total.

Milan struggled with chafing and strong knee pain. Nevertheless with his unbroken spirit, he covered 84,5 km and went home at 23:25.

Ushika's comment on day 5: 'Only descend and descend, from super slow to slower than the slowest!' Still 82 km, we hope faster days will approach him soon. His humour is still in full bloom.

The police were checking the river side of the course, which gave the look as if they were chasing Ushika. He proudly mentioned 'they could not catch me!'

Day 4

We just escaped the rain. Thunder and lightning at 12:40 am, 40 min after we closed day 4.

Another beautiful, but hot day. We have had 4 days of clear but humid weather, but the temperatures have been hot.

Andrea was again the day leader with 106 km. He is struggling to get another pair or two of shoes helikes.  He likes them super breathable and size 47. He ran till midnight having a few short pauses to rest and stretch.  So far his nights have been difficult, as sleep has not come much to him.

Nirbhasa had quite a happy day and closed his performance 27 min before midnight with 102km. The car was already running and waiting close to the finish line to bring him home right away. He is serious when it comes to time management, which is very much understandable.

Ananda-Lahari closed at midnight with 96 km and often shines with inspiration. He has a gentle running and walking style. It is moving to see how concerned and helpful he is to his fellow runners, especially to Milan.

Ushika commented on his day: “Comparing Day 4 with Day 3, I improved from 'super slow' to 'slow though".He finished at midnight with 89,7 km. He was happy and grateful as always.

Milan went home early. He was the first runner closing the day at 23:00 with 84,5 km. After having a cheerful chat on the phone with his spiritual friends in Prague. Milan suffers from chaffing because he has the wrong shorts.

He will receive better ones tomorrow. Also his knee is still troubling him. Luckily,  his spirit is still cheerful and bright.

Priyavadin

Daily averages per day, after four days:

  • Andrea Marcato- 112.194 km / 69.714 miles
  • Nirbhasa Magee- 103.062 km / 64.039 miles
  • Ananda-Lahari Zuscin - 99.670 km / 61.932 miles
  • Ushika Muckenhumer-  95.756 km / 59.500 miles
  • Milan Javornicky-          94.713 km / 58.852 miles

The heat and high mileage has taken a toll on the runners, but at this time, the top three are on comfortable pace, Ushika is right on par, and Milan is a little behind.

With 52 days to go, they are starting to get into shape. A few cooler days should arrive soon, so their positive attitudes might increase as the autumn equinox approaches.

In the meantime, the six-day split arrives in less than 48 hours, and the Fabulous Five keep on moving.

Good luck to runners and helpers.

Day 3

Another warm day without clouds, temperature up to 29 Celsius.

Andrea again proved his fantastic fitness with 114,80 km (110 laps, 71,3 miles) on this hot day, finishing the day with an unbelievable 5min lap (1043 m).

Reaching the finish line 23:59 and 50 sec. Nirbhasa is holding up his brave fight with 98,1 km going home at 23:22.

We had a quite a few little kids playing close to our camp in the afternoon, which made it difficult for Nirbhasa to rest properly in his short afternoon break.

Time to break out the earplugs!

Ananda-Lahari had another happy day with 96 km. He asked the counters to tell him the lap count and km count in German.

Going home early, a few minutes after Nirbhasa, he told me he is happy but it could have been better. It could always be better!

Milan was running till midnight and reached 93,9 km. As a few other runners already did, he had a quick refreshing bath (swim) in our little creek Glan.

Climbing up the little hill, after bathing, he hurt his knee a bit, but told me at midnight that his knee will be ok tomorrow.

Ushika reaching 86,6 km was again full of gratitude and happiness but mentioned that his only problem was that he was super slow (his words).

Priyavadin

Considering the heat of the last three days, and the huge mileage/kms needed, just getting through each day without total depletion is most important. Even if a runner fails to make the necessary laps required for each day, as the days get a little shorter, and the hot temps fade, there will be time to make higher mileage as their fitness begins to grow, and the body adapts.

Patience and perseverance are the necessary qualities in every ultra runner, and this very long multi-day event requires the utmost. A few smiles and joy and ice cream will help too.

Pizza anyone.

Good Luck noble runners

Day 2, For the totals......

Another beautiful and hot late summer day in our peaceful Salzburg. The temperature reached again 27 º Celsius; 93% humidity in the morning. Also when we left after closing the camp at 1 am in the morning everything was wet, including the counter sheets, luckily still readable.

Quite a few people in the park are showing interest in the race and getting excited about it.

Because the weekend is over the park is more peaceful. Late afternoon people were playing the Harry Potter ball game nearby.

Andrea had another great day. He is still running like the joggers in the park, even this night. He finished with a 7 min lap, at 11:59 pm.

Nirbhasa marched on and was going home shortly after 11 pm. It seemed he had less problems than the first day. He was the only runner going home before midnight.

Ananda-Lahari is getting already much more joy from doing his daily laps and overtook Milan and Ushika. He is almost always in a very good frame of mind (heart), smiling and moving quickly.

Ushika had problems in the morning with his left shoulder, which was getting much better after being treated by our young therapist Christian. He finished again very happy this night full of gratitude.

Milan is still very silent but seems to be also quite cheerful. When his spiritual brothers from Prague called his silence ended. He ran bravely like all the other three until midnight.

September 13, First Day

We started with a nice crowd of spectators at 6 am, having visiting disciples and friends from Vienna, Augsburg, Italy, Switzerland, Poland, Portugal, Nuremberg and more....

Smarana gave a talk and read Sahishnu’s speech. After a heart-felt moment, some fellows blew the conch and I led them the first three laps with the bike.

Ushika led the pack the first few hours on his home track. Afterwards Andrea and Nirbhasa passed him. Andrea seems to be the fittest at the moment, being the only one who stayed till midnight. He looked strong and cheerful as usual and super enthusiastic. He talked to Ashprihanal on the phone, which gave him a lot of inspiration. (Ashprihanal Aalto from Finland is the world record holder for this event- 40 days + 6 hours)

For Ananda-Lahari and for Nirbhasa especially it seemed to be a little bit difficult, but nothing serious. Both went home early. Ushika had an excellent day, was very grateful and went home early saying that his '108 km is the most divine number.'

Also Milan was really happy when he finished early and went happily for his well-deserved night break.

The day was very warm, 27 celsius ( 88ºF). Even Andrea was surprised by the hot weather.

- Priyavadin   (Salzburg RD & Lead Organizer of the 3100 2020 Salzburg)

I agree that it was quite warm for the first day, but these types of runners are battle tested and ready for challenges. Plus, all the totals are decent to excellent, given the long road ahead, and the inevitable breaking-in period of 2 weeks or so that usually accompany these super-long multi-day events. It also takes getting used to 4 to 5 hours of sleep a night, after running for 16 to 17 hours all day.

More later,

Sahishnu, (4000 miles away, but feeling good about the run so far)

Stay happy Runners!

On 13 September 2020, the Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race began in Salzburg Austria, with five intrepid runners taking to the start line. Over the next 52 days, the runners will endeavour to complete the epic challenge of running 3,100 miles (just shy of 5,000km) which means they must maintain an average of 60 miles a day.

For the past 23 years, the race has been run in Jamaica, Queens, New York. However, it was clearly not possible to run the race this year in New York as usual. But many runners and race supporters were keen to maintain this special annual race, and so finally (after exploring courses in the Czech Republic and Slovakia) a venue has been found in Salzburg, Austria. The race field has been limited to five runners and will strictly adhere to local health standards to ensure the safety of runners and helpers.

The race was founded by spiritual teacher and ultra-runner pioneer Sri Chinmoy, who saw distance running as a vehicle to enable runners to bring to the fore their physical, mental and spiritual capacities to complete this unique challenge. This year will mark the 24th edition of the race.

“We have to believe in a higher Power.
Only by believing in a higher Power
Can we go beyond and beyond
    Our limited, human capacity.”

    – Sri Chinmoy

In this year's race, these are the five runners who will be taking to the start line.

  • Nirbhasa Magee, 41 (IRL), living in Reykjavik, Iceland - 3 finishes, ranked 22nd
  • Ananda-Lahari Zuscin, 45, Kosice Slovakia - 6 finishes, ranked 25th
  • Ushika Muckenhumer, 52, Salzburg, Austria - 1 finish, ranked 30th
  • Andrea Marcato, 38 (ITA), living in Zurich, Switzerland - first-time runner, two times over 1000km in 10 day race
  • Milan Javornicky, 46, Celakocice, CZE  - first-time runner, 569 miles in ten-day race

Over the next two months, you will be able to follow the race through photos, videos and race reports. Definitely we welcome visitors trackside, so if you are in the area (or if it's safe to travel) please come and stop by! We hope you will be inspired by the efforts and inspiration of the runners in this race. Race Director Rupantar Larosso who lives in NY, US said on the eve of the race "It is great the race is going ahead and I wish all the runners and supporters the best of  luck"

5.000 km run in the park: Italian leads

Monday evening, the runner and yoga specialist Andrea Marcato from Venice completed the first thousand kilometers of the 5,000 km "Sri Chinmoy Race" in a small park in Salzburg-Lehen. This year's race, which is taking place for the 24th time, had to be relocated from the New York district of Queens (USA) to Europe due to the CoV crisis.

At the Glanspitz-Park in Salzburg's Lehen district, sports history is being written in these days and weeks. Five ultra-long distance runners and yoga specialists will be dueling here until November over 5,000 kilometers (or 3,100 miles) and over 52 days.

Total distance corresponds to 120 marathons

Do you run regularly? If so, then you know how it feels: when you can run five, ten or even 20 kilometers. Maybe you also know from your own experience how people feel when they manage their first marathon as amateurs. After many weeks, months, sometimes even years with consistent training and iron discipline.

Even for many competitive athletes and long-distance professionals, it is hard to believe what can now be seen in the small park near the Salzach power plant in Salzburg-Lehen: The length of the course is equivalent to almost 120 marathons. Over a period of about 52 days, every day from 6.00 a.m. to midnight, the athletes run, walk and rest in between. The 5,000 kilometers can only be managed if everyone covers an average of about one hundred kilometers per day.

Salzburgers in the race too

A local hero, 52-year-old Ushika Muckenhumer, is also running. He runs a store for musical instruments in Salzburg. In addition there is the Italian Andrea Marcato (38), who lives in Zurich, the Czech Milan Javornicky (46), who lives near Prague, the Irish Nirbhasa Magee (41), who lives in Iceland, and Ananda-Lahari Zuscin (45) from Kosice in Slovakia. They will complete the total distance on 4,780 laps in the small Salzburg park next to a popular children's playground in Lehen. One lap is about one kilometer long.

All runners are employed, spend almost all their free time in meditation or running training and call themselves yogis. They belong to the network of the ultra long distance runner, yoga and meditation master Sri Chinmoy (1931-2007), who is active on all continents. He once lived in India and the USA.

“What is the point of it all? Pure delusion?”

Organizer of the race in Salzburg is Priyavadin Reisecker, a mathematician and native Upper Austrian from Hochburg-Ach. He runs a vegetarian restaurant in the state capital and has himself participated several times in ultra-long distance races that lasted up to 15 days: "That's tough compared to a normal marathon, but no comparison to what we experience here over more than 50 days.

Pure delusion? Endless running in circles, completely in the sense of the former self-knowledge of Formula 1 world champion Niki Lauda? Well, you could look at it that way, Reisecker smiles: "In the end, it's not about triumphs over others, not about running down competitors, but about our own ego and the things that lie deep inside our souls. At this distance, a person emotionally goes through almost everything that is conceivable, negative and positive, in addition to physical suffering and joy.

Global crisis: "Trust leads to the goal”

Is this a special kind of these ego trips, for which many types of extreme sports are famous and some are notorious? "The world is currently in a deep crisis, the negative energies seem to dominate massively. Many say that an end is not in sight. But our participants are convinced that they are not only circling around themselves here, but that they can also motivate many people not to let themselves be left hanging. There is always a way. And it continues even from the great lows if you tackle it, trusting yourself and others. And of course the runner's role model of our yoga master Sri Chinmoy plays a role in this," says Priyavadin Reisecker.

Even the doctor in charge is amazed

The Austro-American Tom Drekonja has a practice for orthopedics in Salzburg. He is also an expert and assessor for Austrian state authorities in aviation medicine and an aircraft pilot. Drekonja now examines the athletes as a volunteer at regular intervals when they take breaks: "I am surprised that they all have excellent hemoglobin values, even though they are vegetarians. Normally, a person can only achieve such performances if he or she has enough red meat on the menu as a source of iron. But their vegetable diet is extremely good and carefully selected. The main problem is that they do not lose too much weight over the seven weeks. So eat, eat, eat ..."

Weight loss as a danger

Under these conditions, a runner will consume about 10,000 kilocalories per day. Priyavadin Reisecker's Salzburg organization team includes numerous volunteers from Austria and abroad - men and women who take turns and complement each other over six weeks in the intensive care and nutrition of the five runners. They cook and organize practically the whole day. In addition, there is the work of caring for wounds and muscles. Each athlete "destroys" between 15 and 20 pairs of running shoes on the total distance until November.

Salzburgers can hardly believe it

From day to day more and more passers-by of all ages and social classes are interested in the race. The organizers would like some cyclists to pass by more slowly in the small park so as not to endanger anyone on the circuit.

The lovingly designed refreshment station for the five athletes at the supply tent is particularly striking. During our ORF local inspection, the Salzburg pensioner Willi Hecht, a still good tennis player and athlete, also came by, together with his wife Sieglinde, who is in a wheelchair: "I've been noticing the tent for days, but I thought it was just one of the many charity events. Now I know the data, facts and background. You need time to really understand it. These five men make the impossible possible. We come here every day now."
