  • Day 23 - Monday 7th July 2003

    By Atulya Berube
    14 December

Namitabha Arsic and Andreas Puntigam scoffed at the heat and ran 65.8560 and 64.7584 miles, respectively, to carve up the rest of the field. Trishul Cherns reached 1300 miles for the third time (22+16:31:47). Later in the evening stiff breezes snuck into the area and cooled things down a little, paving the way for the  athletes to get their miles.

  • Day 22 - Sunday 6th July 2003

    By Atulya Berube
    14 December

The heat continues, the air is still, the runners struggle again. Only Andreas and Namitabha reach 60 miles, the rest of the field dig deep to find the resolve to continue. Suprabha passed 1300 miles for the eleventh time in her career (21+04:44:44). Matt reached 1000 miles for the first time (21+11:20:53). Reaching milestones or new ground definitely helps the runners to keep plodding in 90ºF, sticky-hot conditions.

The broiler temperature went up to 95ºF. Namitabha led the group again with 63.6608 miles, a remarkable achievement considering the dreadful heat and humidity. He passed 1300 miles (20+01:21:03 ) for the seventh time. Andreas and Suprabha hung on for 60 miles. The others struggled or survived. Matt had his best day since the first, reaching 53.2336 miles. Trishul said, “ Is this torture or what?”. Not really, If you love or at least tolerate it. It won’t be this hot forever. Tomorrow, some relief. Only thirty days to go.

    14 December

Typical hot and sticky, 92º,  July - "New York-summer" day. Untypical performance- Namitabha Arsic. He ran well, especially in the evening, with 68.0512 miles, his best day since Day 2. Andreas Puntigam also excelled with 63.1120 miles. The rest of the field struggled with  the lack of breezes and little cloud cover in the hottest part of the afternoon. Expecting another scorcher tomorrow.

    14 December

Without question the hottest day of the year, so far. Only Namitabha reached over 60 miles with 60.9168. The runners had to temper their resolve in a survival-test with high 90’s and high humidity. No breeze in the evening made it feel warmer than it already was. How they lasted the whole day in this weather event is an object of our appreciation.

A sweltering New York summer day- high in the 90’s with a lot of sun. Namitabha Arsic continues to pound away with 65.30 miles, but Andreas keeps pace with the same total. Suprabha is rounding into shape nicely by cranking out 63.11 miles, fighting with Trishul Cherns for the third spot. Abichal had his best day since Day 1 with 55.42 miles. Thursday should be hotter and stickier, if that is possible.

The temps soared into the 90’s, causing all the runners to slow a little. Namitabha Arsic ran well in the evening to garner 65.8560 miles and stretch his lead a few miles. Suprabha Beckjord made to sixty miles again, her fifth straight day to do so. Abichal Sherrington passed his 10 Day total of 531 miles from six weeks ago by two miles, and looks none the worse for it. Hot weather will stay in the area for the next three days, so the runners test is not over yet.
