Andrea first to 500 miles
At around 2 pm this afternoon, Andrea Marcato became the first runner to reach 500 miles, in a time of 6 days, 9 hours, 1 minute and 18 seconds.
He first ran 500 miles in a 10-day race back in 2017. As far as we can make out, this is the 17th time he has reached the distance in a competitive race: seven times in the 3,100 Mile Race, five times in the Sri Chinmoy 10-Day Race in Sofia, Bulgaria, and five times in the Sri Chinmoy 10-Day Race in New York. It is an impressive record.
Some years the 500-mile efforts come just a few days apart. He has been known to run the Sri Chinmoy 10-Day in New York in the last week of April, then line up again in early May for the Sri Chinmoy 10-Day in Sofia. It is all part of preparing his body to run for weeks on end when he takes on the 3,100. He certainly has the capacity to recover quickly from these remarkable distances.
Because the exact 500-mile mark isn't always recorded when a runner carries on to a longer distance, it is hard to know what his best time for the distance really is. One can only wonder how fast he might run it if he prepared specifically for a 500-mile race, rather than treating these as training runs for future adventures.

This table shows average mileage after week 1. To finish within 52 days requires daily average of 59.6. This shows how the top 7 runners are above the minimum daily average and have a positive mileage buffer.
DAILY STATS
A busy day for milestones. Five runners went through 400 miles, and there was a change in the top five.
