Nirbhasa is from Ireland. He is an enthusiastic multi-day runner, having completed four times the Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race - the longest race in the world.

“…The fifteen participants—all but two of them disciples of the Bengali Guru Sri Chinmoy, who has resided in the neighborhood for forty years—hailed from ten countries on three continents. They ran in all weather, seven days a week, from 6:00 a.m. to midnight, or until their bodies compelled them to rest. If they logged fewer than fifty miles on a given day, they risked disqualification. By their own reckoning, the runners climbed eight meters per lap, mounting and descending a spectral Everest every week and a half. They toiled in this fashion for six to eight weeks, however long it took them to complete 5,649 circuits—3,100 miles—around a single city block…” - from Run Like Fire Once More: Chasing Perfection at the World’s Longest Footrace By: Sam Shaw at Harpers Magazine

    Why Run 3100 Miles?

By Tejvan Pettinger author bio »
    15 July

    About the author:

Tejvan organises short-distance running and cycling races for the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team in his home city of Oxford. He is also a very good cyclist, having won the National hill climb championships in 2013 and finished 3rd in the National 100 Mile Time Trials in 2014.

Two of the most common questions asked at the 3100 mile race are: Why? and What do the runners eat?

The eating requirements are easy to answer, see what runners eat. However, the question of why anyone would want to run a 3100 mile race is not so easy to answer. In fairness it can only really be answered by those who have actually completed the distance. The furthest I have run is a 7 mile cross country race, which I very nicely came last. That is another story, but suffice to say I am not the most qualified person to answer why people run 3100 miles. Nevertheless it is an intriguing question. On the face of it, running a 3100 mile race has many challenges:

    1. 2 months without working.
    2. Innumerable blisters and other physical ailments
    3. The weather: Hot, humid weather and thunderstorms.
    4. Lack of sleep. Runners run from 6am up until 12pm midnight.
    5. A good pair of running shoes can be worn out after just 10 days of running.

However, despite the difficulties inherent in such a race, it also touches a deep seated aspiration for self transcendence. There is no human who has not, at some time, aspired to achieve something better, more fulfilling than previously.

    Why Run 3100 miles?

    1. Be Free of daily distractions

Usually we get caught up in innumerable demands on our time. Bills to pay, calls to take, things to do. For the competitors of the 3100 mile race, the only thing to worry about is running. This can be a liberating experience, it allows us to get into a certain flow of thoughts and ideas. Suprabha Beckjord, the only woman to have completed the race, and only runner to have finished every race says it is like “a spiritual pilgrimage”, although as she also states: “It’s a little different from sitting in a temple and meditating,” [4]

    2. Self Transcendence.

We all desire, in some way, to do something better than before. We get a sense of satisfaction when we surpass previous achievements. Running 3100 miles is in some ways the ultimate physical challenge. Each day is an opportunity to do more than before. Sopan Tsekov, mentioned in his report on the 2006 race:

“I felt so many times on the edge of life and death really pushing the limits getting the ultimate experience of pushing and tiredness… In this way I feel that this race is so transforming, it makes you go beyond your abilities or, in other words, let the divine in you work on the physical and the mind.” [2]

    3. Learn More about Self.

To the runners of the 3100 mile race, a common theme is that the race is more than a physical challenge. To run such a distance require the cooperation of mind, body and spirit. To run such a distance, inevitably means that we need to learn more of our self. It can help contact a part of us that remains hidden in daily activities. Srdjan Stojanovich, who completed the race in 2005, said that:

“After a few days, the body is totally exhausted and you have to rely on spiritual things because the body doesn’t work any more. It’s like being dropped in the middle of the Atlantic and then they say you have to swim to the shore.” [1]

Abichal Watkins, a 44 year old journalist from Wales, who has entered the 3100 mile race for the past 4 years says of the race:

“We all have the capacity to go someplace inside ourselves, someplace where we haven’t been before,” Watkins said. “And, for me, that’s what this race is all about.” [4]

    4. To inspire others.

Whatever we do has an impact on other people. When we see people achieve great things it gives us confidence that we can transcend our previous capacities. It does not mean that we have to run 3100 miles as well. It just shows us that, what was once thought of as impossible, need not remain impossible if we have the right attitude and determination. Sri Chinmoy explains the importance of gaining and sharing inspiration.

“ I am a man of prayer and meditation. I feel inspiration is of paramount importance. If I can inspire someone, and if that person also can inspire me, then we can do many good things for the betterment of this world. ” [5]

    5. Enjoy it.

It may seem  hard to believe, but the participants who come back every year say how they really enjoy aspects of running and the race. For many, the enjoyment or satisfaction becomes more important than the miles and the competition. Suprabha Beckjord says of the race:

“You have to keep the inner and the outer parts balanced. Of course, physically you have to be focused on the road. But I can stay really happy if I do not get too involved in the mileage. Earlier, I really did, because I had the capacity to run faster. But to keep up the joy level, the less I focus on the pavement and the time, it is easier for me to stay in my heart, which is what we say in meditation.” [3]

Women’s Distance Running and the 3100 Mile Race

By Tejvan Pettinger author bio »
    26 June

    About the author:

Tejvan organises short-distance running and cycling races for the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team in his home city of Oxford. He is also a very good cyclist, having won the National hill climb championships in 2013 and finished 3rd in the National 100 Mile Time Trials in 2014.

In 1928, in the first year of women’s track and field events being allowed into the Olympics, 3 women collapsed in the 800 metres. Because of this it was felt by the authorities it was not safe for women to participate in events greater than 200 metres.

As a consequence, up until 1960, the longest distance for female runners at the Olympic Games was 200 metres. The idea of women running a marathon was at best frowned upon, but at worst was deemed to be medically dangerous. Women were placed in a catch 22 situation. They weren’t allowed to run, because it was thought marathon running was not safe. But, because they couldn’t run, they were unable to prove they could.

However, a few intrepid female runners ignored conventional wisdom to show that women could run respectable marathon times.

One of the early women marathon pioneers was Roberta Gibb; she sneaked into the Boston Marathon in 1966 and finished with an unofficial time of 3:21.25. When she entered a year later, officials forced her off course so she couldn’t get an official time.

However, times were changing; their was a boom in running and social attitudes to women were altering very quickly. Women were allowed to participate in various marathons, and in 1971, the NY marathon had a separate section for female runners. However, it was not until 1984 that the marathon became an official Olympic distance for women.
    Ultra Running Boom

In the sport of distance running, perceptions of what is possible and what is not, have changed at a frantic pace. The 1980s and 1990s saw a boom in the popularity of ultra running. From marathons, new races of upto 1000 miles redefined the boundaries of running. Although in a minority, women proved that in the sport of distance running they were capable of running very long distances.

    Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team

The Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team were often at the forefront of ultra distance running. With the suggestion of Sri Chinmoy, the Sri Chinmoy MT began organising ultra distance races which included: 6 and 10 day races, and also 700, 1,000 and 1,300 mile races. In 1996, Sri Chinmoy initiated a new challenge: the 2700 mile race. The next year the distance was increased to 3100 miles and the race has been run annually ever since. It is officially the world’s longest certified footrace and only a select number of runners have completed the distance.

Suprabha Beckjord 11 Times finisher of Self Transcendence 3100 Mile race

    suprabha_beckjord_home.jpg
The only runner to have completed all 11 editions of the race is Suprabha Beckjord. Such a record is a monumental sporting achievement; before the start of the 2007 edition Suprabha had run 30,600 miles in this particular race alone. (She has also the 6th fastest record for a 6 day race of 459 miles. )

One of the most common questions asked the runners of the 3100 mile race is why? Suprabha gives this reply:

“I get a lot of inspiration from doing this kind of distance. It really is like a pilgrimage. You are not dealing with the things you have to deal with at work, at home, like phone calls and faxes. In my work, I place orders and pay bills, things like that.”

    [1]
If Suprabha is able to finish her 12th race, it will make a grand total of 33,700 miles.

How far is 33,700 miles? Well the circumference of the earth at the equator is 24,901 miles.
But one thing is certain, however you look at 33,700 miles, it’s an awful lot of 200 metre races.

USA’s Ms. Beckjord Runs Where No Man Has Ever Run

Tuesday, August 14, 2007 (Jamaica, N.Y.) – On Sunday, June 17, at 6:00 a.m. the world’s longest certified race began with 12 starters – eleven men and one woman. Today, the sponsoring Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team is proud to release the results of the Eleventh Annual Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race. In keeping with our race’s tradition, the results for all runners are announced upon the finish of the last runner, which was this afternoon.

Mr. Asprihanal Aalto, 36, of Finland, set a personal best of 43 days+04:26:32 thus winning the race for the fourth time in seven performances since 2000. His time was third best of all-time with the top two times set by Madhupran W. Schwerk (Germany) who, at age 50, set the world record of 41 days + 08:16:29 in 2006. Schwerk did not compete in this year’s race. This year, Aalto averaged 71.788 miles/day or 115.531 km/day. Next year Aalto aims to run an average of more than 72.9 miles/day to beat Schwerk’s second best time.

Ms. Suprabha Beckjord, 51, of Washington, DC, USA, set a new women’s Master’s World Record with a time of 58 days + 07:54:27, an improvement of some 44 hours over her finish time last year. She averaged 53.149 miles/day or 85.535 km/day. At age 42, Beckjord set the women’s World Record of 49 Days +14:25:37. She is the only woman ever to have attempted the distance and is the only individual to have completed the race all eleven times. Over the 11 consecutive summers that the race has been held, 31 individuals have attempted the distance and 23 have finished one or more times for a total of 73 performances (finishes) since 1997. Beckjord leads with 11 performances. The next best is Aalto with seven performances.

This years 3100 mile race gets under way in five days and the field has a few changes from last year. Missing this year are Wolfgang Schwerk and Hans-Jurgen Schlotter, Sopan and Rathin. The race will be welcoming two newcomers and an announcement will be made shortly listing all the runners. Sopan has a new site dedicated to the 3100 and is worth checking out. The weather in New York has been variable - what a surprise - with high temps and a fair amount of rain so far. The 10 day forecast says a 30% chance of T-storms and then nice weather for the next four days which will give the runners time to settle.

    Runners

This years race has three newcomers including experienced Czech runners Vlastimil Dvoracek

and the youthful Petr Spacil who had such a great race in this years Self-Transcendence 10 day race in New York in April. Also making his first appearance is this years emissary from Australia, Grahak Cunningham.

Ever present is the indefatiguable Supra Beckjord who has run every edition of the race since its inception in 1996 and this years Self-Transcendence 6 day Race winner Ashprihanal Aalto, last years second placer and is surely tryining to topple Madupran's record set in 2006.<p>

    And Off They Go...

With a crowd of more than 150 watching, the 11th annual Self Transcendence 3100 Mile Race began in Jamaica, Queens at 6:18 this morning. After a brief meditation by Marathon Team founder Sri Chinmoy, the 12 intrepid runners took their first steps towards their Himalayan goal. Good luck to all!

New photos of the start are here.
New home page for the current race is here.

The Heat beats the feet...or so it was for some of the runners. With temperatures over 90 degrees on the first day and with similar temperatures on the second day, there was not much time for acclimatisation to New York weather. Ayojan and Pranab are suffering from what can be called "too much heat on the first day of a race" syndrome. Upset stomach, lack of energy, slight chill...that's no way to start a race. Ayojan recovered nicely, however, Pranab had to take the easy approach...rest, rest and more rest. By the afternnon of the second day he was up and walking again and by tomorrow he should be back.

What drives these runners to continue on their journey? Is it a desire to achieve some exalted spiritual state of ecstasy? or the dream of reaching satori? or maybe something as simple as...FOOD! Tomorrow meet the people who fuel these pilgrims: the cooks!
