Stutisheel Finishes 3100

By Arpan De Angelo
3 August

Stutisheel Lebedyev completed the 3100 Mile Self-Transcendence Race for the ninth time today to the delight of an enthusiastic crowd. His wife and daughter, who have been helping him the whole time, were delighted and relieved as he crossed the finish line once again. He battled some difficult times with a few health complications which he bravely faced and patiently fought through to come out victorious in the end. Although it was not his fastest time in this race, crossing the finish line in any time is a great personal achievement for anyone. Tomorrow, the last day of the race, we should see Nirbhasa cross the line in the early evening. The other remaining runnners: Kaneenika, Baladev and Ananda-Lahari, will not cover the full 3100 miles, but nevertheless will stay the course until the end and celebrate their own personal victories as well.  The ultimate goal of 3100 miles is not always reached by everyone in the race. Yet self-transcendence is still experienced on many levels. All of the runners, regardless of the distance covered, have demonstrated this powerful concept each and every day.

Day 50

Surasa Mairer,56,from Vienna Austria, reached the pinnacle of her running career today, breaking the 17-year-old mark held by ultrarunning immortal Suprabha Beckjord by 6 hours,38 minutes with a remarkable finish of 3100 miles in 49 days+07:52:01. She averaged 62.848 miles per day (101.144 km). She has now extended her abilities to the longest race which she has completed three times. She continued her streak of never losing to another lady in a multiday race.

With less than a full day to go, Stutisheel Lebedyev is poised to finish monday evening for the ninth time in his running career. He has 47.7 miles to cover, and should finish between 6:00pm and 7:45pm. Nirbhasa Magee continued his quest to finish 3100 by tuesday evening with 57.6 miles. Start of the 2015 Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3100-MIle Race

Author Martin Fritz Huber presents a detailed examination of the 2015 Sri Chinmoy Self-Transcendence 3100-Mile Race in his Augsut 12, 2015 Outside Magazine online article, "The Path To Self-Transcendence Begins with 3,100 Miles". The article centers on runner Nirbhasa Magee and his answer to several of the author's quesitons. (Photo: start of the 2015 race. Nirbhasa Magee, second from left in white t-shirt).

From the article:

"On Tuesday, August 4, at 6:12 p.m., a former IT professional named Nirbhasa Magee completed a half-mile lap around a nondescript block in Queens, New York. That may sound like an unspectacular feat of endurance, but what distinguishes Magee from most other joggers plodding around Joseph Austin Playground, is that, over the course of the last 52 days, the 35-year-old Irishman has done the .5488 mile loop 5,649 times, an astounding total of 3,100-miles."

Surprise Visitors-Once in a Blue Moon

By Arpan De Angelo
31 July

Every day is a special day in the 3100 mile race. So many people come to help, sing, support, and cheer on the runners. Today, Jim and Annette Magee, the parents of Nirbhasa, came all the way from Ireland to cheer on their son in his last few days of reaching the ultimate goal of 3100 miles. They showed up on the course as he was making a turn toward our 'camp' in the evening before sunset. It was a joyous occasion for the whole family, including Sadanand, Nirbhasa's brother and helper. Later in the night Surasa, our woman leader, passed the 3000 mile mark, well on her way to a great 3100 mile finish soon. We also witnessed a big and bright 'blue moon' which is when a full moon ocurrs for the second time in the same month. This only happens about every 3 years or so. To add to the excitement of the day, Atmavir will finish tomorrow afternoon after reaching 3000 miles early this morning as the excitement in this epic journey continues towards the end.

Day 48

Atmavir Petr Spacil has moved into position to finish early saturday afternoon. With only 60 laps(32.928 miles) to negotiate, he should finish between 12:50 and 1:45 pm, give or take a few minutes. His last full day on the course was as fruitful as any he has run this year. He reached 74 miles and is content to end the race on an upnote after a series of stomach and intestinal ailments thwarted his attempt to set a personal record. Meanwhile, Surasa Mairer is closing in on another great finish in a sparkling career spanning 19 years and over 20 multidays. She should finish sunday afternoon. She is now 21.4 miles ahead of the previous women's record set in 1998 by Suprabha Beckjord of Washington,DC. Stutisheel Lebedyev is poised to reach his goal of 3100 miles on monday night. He has crossed the finish line eight times previously.

On We Proceed

By Arpan De Angelo
30 July

Yuri had completed the 3100 miles last night with no time to complete his 5000 Km, an option which the runners usually do to get an official time for 5000 kilometres. It means running about 7 miles more, or 13 laps. He completed these laps early in the morning today to a small crowd on hand to cheer him on with bells and applause. In return he stayed to cheer on the runners who are still completing their miles as the race will go on through day 52, next Tuesday. The weather is getting hotter and humid but in the middle of the day today we had a hard rain which brought in cooler temperatures. The remaining 7 runners keep running no matter what the weather as friends and helpers maintain their support for these incredible athletes.
