Observations & Quotations from the 3100 Mile--

I have visited the New York Sri Chinmoy 3100 Mile (5000Km) race on six different days this summer.  In no particular order, here are some little observations and quotations from the runners, their helpers, and race supporters involved in this grueling test (runners must average 59.6 miles/ day to finish within the 52 day limit).   "Normally I wear the Saucony Kinivara.  Then last year at this race (the 3100) I couldn't wear it, it didn't work.  Now this year I can wear it!"                          --Kaneenika Janakova (SLOVAKIA/ USA)   "Everything in this race is about BALANCE.  If you push even a little too much, too hard, you can get injured or sick."                         --Atmavir Petr Spacil (CZECH REP.)   "The main challenge was mental.  Running around a block can be boring.  Let's face it, there's lots of things we like to do in life;  visit new places, watch TV, read books, write postings ... just doing one thing can be tough, especially when that one thing is pounding the footpath all day."                           --Rathin Matt Boulton (AUSTRALIA), former entrant in the 3100 and many other multi-days   "It's hard being out here running, but it is harder NOT being out here."                           --Baladev Pavel Saroz (SLOVAKIA), running the race at the moment)   "I was running in the Saucony Nomad, then my achilles started hurting.  I switched to the Kinivara and the pain went away.  But then it (achilles pain) returned.  I went back to the other shoe (Nomad) and the pain went away again.  You never know ..."                           --Sopan Tsekov (BULGARIA), youngest finisher ever, also running in current race                            "You have to find a really low gear and stay there."                           --Abichal Sherrington (WALES) former finisher of race, current publisher/ editor of MULTIDAY RUNNING ------------------------   Best wishes to all the runners and their support crews.  Tuesday July 26 = Race day 38.       For updates and webcam please see:  http://3100.srichinmoyraces.org/     (--To be continued)         Here is your Smart Chat ( Ctrl + Space )
